To Benicar or not to Benicar?

The doc has talked about upping my azi dose now. But because my blood pressure is still somewhat erratic at times I'm kind of freaked out about aggravating it with a higher azi dose. She's mentioned Benicar a couple of times. She says it's good because it will not only calm the bp but reduce the inflammationi. But I'm concerned about that too since my bp does not stay high consistently. It can fluctuate from normal to high and back again literally within minutes. What will Benicar do when my bp is not at the high state? Will it drop too low and will I end up passing out driving to work and smashing into a tree? That worries me but I'm also afraid to increase the azi without doing something to calm the erratic bp. So I'm not sure what to do. I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Sunni- I used somewhat tiny

Sunni- I used somewhat tiny doses of Benicar during the first 9 months of the CAPi to help manage the stirred up inflammationi. I have low bp to start with, and a whole tablet would leave me crawling, but a half tab was manageable and saved me from having to use so much ibuprophen. Worth trying at low dose on a day you don't have to drive or worry about pressures. Start on a weekend perhaps. The effects were pretty predictable for me.

I agree with Jim adjust to

I agree with Jim adjust to your body not what is the norm on the MPi, just my opinion.

Benicar has taken me out of a hole sooo many times.  It is crucial in helping me get over sinus infectionsi and seems to stabalize my body temp which is very important

 Sunnivara - Doctors

 Sunnivara -

Doctors frequently prescribe blood pressure meds to people who don't have high blood pressurei.    BP Meds have many serendipitous sequelae besides lowering blood pressure.

For example - propranolol a beta blocker is prescribed to archers and rifle competitors to keep their heart rates calm while they compete, Hytrin or Cardura to men with benign prostatic hypertrophy to improve urine function, calcium channel blockers to cancer patients to boost cancer drugs through efflux pumps - I could go on here - but these are just a few examples.

For the folks who are prescribed these anti-hypertensives who don't have high blood pressure - as long as they are titrated slowly - they are generally well tolerated and have modest if any effect on the blood pressure of normotensive patients.

Jim (as usual) gave you some good advice.  If your doctor is the one who suggested this - even better!  Who knows trying it could really stabilize your erratic bp.

Good luck !

I was on a low dose of inderal to help with tremors.  I was originally started on that in high school.  The dosage can be adjusted for you to see what works.  I, also, have had erratic bp in the past few months since starting this whole thing.  But I have felt well enough to work out and my bp has come down to normal.  I am not saying that working out will fix this.   But it is helpful.  I don't know if you are up to it at this point so maybe you could be prescribed something to help bring it down until you are.  But the doctor told me that every little bit of exercise helps with bp, even a little.  So whatever you can do.

Thanks for all the replies.

I do work out regularly and my bp was perfectly normal before starting abxi. I've tried all sorts of things from cutting out caffeine to reducing salt intake but nothing has had an effect. The doc says it's not unusual for the die-off inflammatory/anxiety response to cause hypertensioni (among other miseries, as you all know!) so diet and exercise changes are not likely to have much impact in this case. She often prescribes a little Benicar with abxi. So I guess I'll give it a try and just start with a very low dose and work my way up carefully, as suggested. Hopefully it will help stabilize the bp rather than just lower it across the board.

"seems to stabalize my body temp"

Oh, I would love that! I hope it would do that for me too. I'm getting really tired of this roller coaster of hot and sweaty one hour and feeling like I'm sitting naked at the North pole the next, with nothing I do able to warm me up short of living in a hot tub.

How long does Benicar take

How long does Benicar take to have an effect? I started taking 1/2 tab (10mg) yesterday and my doc said if that doesn't work then go up to 1 tab (20mg) but didn't specify how long to try 1/2 tab first. I had an "episode" yesterday afternoon that the Beni didn't seem to calm but it may have been too soon or it may have been the result of doubling my azi....or both. I was taking 250mg azi every other day and was bumped up to 250mg daily at the same time I started the Beni. So now I don't know how long to try the 1/2 tab of Beni before bumping it up to 1 tab.

Presacanario, you're right.

Presacanario, you're right. It does seem to stabilize body temp! I started taking it last Thurs and I've been feeling so much more comfortable in that way the last few days.

Only bad thing is I've feeling tired and cranky this morning. Is that a side-effect or am I just suffering from Monday Morning Blues (aggravated by DST)? lol

Sunni, From my experiences

Sunni,

From my experiences while on the MPi using high doses of Benicar for the last 3+ yrs, I would give Benicar about 2 full days to know what it's doing. I'm very curious if you notice any abxi potentiation while on Benicar.

If you're not familiar with the MP it uses extremely low doses of combination abxi (full dose of Zithi is 125 mg every 10 days) because folks get so "symptomatic" and unable to take much more than an 1/8 or for some even a 1/16 of a Zith while on the high doses of Benicar (40 mg every 6 hrs)

I'm still trying to learn how that "works" and if the symptoms are in fact die-off or some other phenomenon so it may not be the issue at all. Just looking, trying to learn and very curious and quizzical. Smile

Did MP for 3 1/2 yrs. NACi 1200 mg/2x day, myco+ I (still) want my life back! CFIDSi/FMSi, Hashimoto's, Psoriasis, PA, IBSi, Secondary Addison's

Hi Reenie. I'm not really

Hi Reenie. I'm not really familiar with MPi. I haven't been able to find a doc who will do a CAPi. Why does MP use high doses of Benicar? I'm on a low dose just to keep the bp lower since it was all over the place. I, like you, am still trying to figure out what's going on. I can find no hard evidence of the "die-off" effect. On the other hand, I can't find any evidence that these reactions are drug "side effects" either. All I know is the symptoms are there whatever the cause. The Benicar does help reduce symptoms but not reliably. I seem to be having fewer bad days since I started it and the bad days seem to be less sever most of the time. But sometimes I still have a really nasty bad day and can't, for the life of me, figure out why that day is worse than another. There's no obvious difference between that and a good day as far as what might have set it off. So frustrating, isn't it?

Sunni, The MP is another

Sunni,
The MPi is another CAPi with D and light restriction and much higher doses of Benicar than typically rx'd along with extremely low doses of abxi

I came here asking questions after not being able to get any convincing solid and sound answers to what happened to me this past October when I appeared to be relapsing after a great 6 months which looked and felt like recovery.  Very long story.  Frown

Anyway,  the MP is short for the Marshall Protocol which was designed by Trevor Marshall, PhD.  You can google it if you like.  There are a few of the folks from that site active on this site now, like me.
