Timing of suppliment and antibiotics

I began taking antibioticsi for possible MSi recently as prescribed by David Wheldoni.

I also take Inosine and NACi.

Is it OK to take these supplementsi at the same time as the antibiotics or should I wait a little while due to one of the above supplementsi compromising the absorption or optimum effect of the antibiotics?

Thanks, Rudi

Hi RudiFirst, I'm not a

Hi Rudi

First, I'm not a doctor nor a medical expert, just someone like yourself who is following the CAPi and taking supplementsi.  This is a question that I had also when I started out and a common question to have.  With that, I can tell you what I do though there may be other approaches.  What's important is that you find what works for you and stick to it over time.

In my case, I prefer to buffer between taking the supplementsi and taking the antibioticsi.  I generally prefer to leave about 2 hours between taking the supplements, which I take first, and taking the antibiotics.  This changes slightly when I'm on a pulse so that in the morning, first thing, I take flagyl, then I take the supplement about 1.5 hours later, then I take the other antibiotics about 2 hours later.

My understanding from discussions I've had with people here is that the supplements generally don't interfere with the antibiotics.  I have been concerned in the past that calcium in particular would interfere with doxycycline; however, that concern has been layed to rest.  The interference would be more with other similar antibiotics such as tetracycline and not doxycyline so much.

I thought I read something about vitamin C and possible vitamin E interfering with flagyl, though I can't for the life of me find the article to back it up.  In any case, I stick with my approach and it's served me well so far.

NACi can be taken at any time and will not interfere with anything.

HI Rudi, at first I was

HI Rudi, at first I was very cautious and spaced everything well apart, very soon though, I found this very difficult to time, so I just took antibioticsi and supplementsi together: doxycycline and roxithromycin in the morning, with about half the supplementsi and breakfast.  The rest of the supplements, including calcium, with dinner.

Pfizer, the original patentees of doxycycline, do advise not taking calcium, iron or magnesium(in the form of antacids) within two hours of taking doxycycline.  Small amounts of calcium are fine, though, since a glass of milk is advised for people prone to feeling nauseous, like me.

If you take activated charcoal, of course, this needs to be at lest two hours apart from anything.  I gave that up pretty quickly because I was already taking chlorella, which you can take with anything.

If DW had said any of this was unwise, I would have altered it immediately............Sarah

Stratton/Wheldon regime since August 2003, for very aggressive SPMSi.  Intermittent therapy after one year. 2007 still take this, now two weeks every three months, but still slowly improving and no exacerbation since starting. EDSS was about 7, now 2.

Completed Stratton/Wheldon regime for aggressive secondary progressive MSi in June 2007, after nearly four years, three of which intermittent.   Still slowly improving and no exacerbation since starting. EDSSi was 7, now 2, less on a good day.
