I read this in a newsletter about the health benefits of sunlight from Dr Mercola:
"What many people, including health professionals, fail to realize is that your cells have
two receptors for vitamin A, for every vitamin Di receptor. There is a vitally important
relationship between vitamin A and vitamin D. If you receive too much vitamin D, vitamin
A will help protect you from an excess. This is a crucial concept to understand, as many
individuals will take this new information regarding vitamin D, and start to take massive
doses - thinking this would be a good thing.....
Now please understand that I am referring to vitamin A, NOT beta-carotene. Beta carotene
will simply not provide the protection against vitamin D overdose that you require. You
need the real deal vitamin A. Probably the best source of vitamin A is beef liver. About
3-4 ounces twice a week or six ounces once week would be an appropriate amount for most
people. Since it is an oil soluble vitamin, you don’t need it every day.
If beef liver does not sound very appealing to you, vitamin A concentrates from fish are
inexpensive and available at most health food stores. 50,000 units once or twice a week,
should provide you with most of the vitamin A you will need"
........
For those of you who are not familiar with Dr Mercola he is a physician from North America. He publishes regular newsletters for his email subscribers. These newsletters have an obvious commercial intent, but also include a lot of interesting information if you can stomach the doctors sensationalist tendancies!
........
I'm going to email a couple of the of the experts connected to http://www.vitamindcouncil.com/ to find a little more about the ideal ratios of vitamin D and A.
I was very interested to read that beta carotene is not protective in this fashion. I exchanged my vitamin A supplement to beta carotene because vitamin A can become toxic if it accumulates in the body.
I wonder, does increasing vitamin A intake reduces the anti-inflammatory properties of vitamin D?

I stand corrected. Asked my doctor about E and he sent me lots of info about how beneficial it is. So I am taking it again.
Here is one that addresses Cpni:
Retinoic acid prevents Chlamydia pneumoniae-induced foam cell development in a mouse model of atherosclerosis.

Chlamydia pneumoniae, a common respiratory pathogen, has been associated with cardiovascular disease. C. pneumoniae infection accelerates atherosclerotic lesion development in hyperlipidemic animals. Retinoic acid, an anti-oxidant, inhibits infection of endothelial cells by C. pneumoniae. The present study demonstrated that retinoic acid suppresses the acceleration of foam cell lesion development induced by C. pneumoniae in hyperlipidemic C57BL/6J mice. Retinoic acid treatment had no effect on foam cell lesion development in uninfected animals. Lung infection and duration was decreased in treated mice, suggesting one mechanism by which retinoic acid reduces C. pneumoniae-accelerated foam cell lesion formation in hyperlipidemic mice.
