"Renowned Merck Manuals"?

"Renowned Merck Manuals"? The one I've heard about has always been The Merck Index, a hardcore compendium of chemical data -- which, surprise surprise, they're still charging money for. The ones they're giving away seem to be manuals that tell you how to treat diseasesi, using all the nice pharmaceuticals sold by Merck.

Norman, they are also a

Norman, they are also a source of information about symptomatology and diagnosis of which I believe is better than the definitions that are available through many of the pop up responses when you google a condition to get some perspective on what a condition or disease is about.  I've owned a hard cover edition of one (I have replaced it every 10 years or so with updates) and it is handy for an over view.  It is more than a drug pushing pamphlet being published and if you are not up on medical terminology then you'll need to continue to look up definitions as you make you way through your subject.    I cannot say that it is as easy to use as hard cover and I would guess that your scientific-engineering background? would have you know about the publication that you have know about but I have know about and owned a Merck Manual and it is on the list of books for a basic Nursing education reference shelf along with thousands of dollars of other texts.  The first edition was published in 1889, long before big pharma.  And on that front page of my hard copy it states that Merck Professional Handbooks are published on a nonprofit basis as a service to the scientific community.   Well you can be jaded about much that I post it seems and since you have accessability to all sorts of credible data this post is likely of little use to you.  However many reading here and playing catch up regarding medically technical terms, disease and condititon may well find a higher quality of information for their personal understandings and ability to converse with their providers and it is for them Norman, not the highly read individual such as yourself, that I offer this link.  They do still charge money for these texts and yes they now have consumer versions that I would not choose to buy as I feel the depth of exploration would be more shallow.   You often one up me Norman and I usually do not get into a debate with you, however this time I will simply say that your jaded perspective has my opposition and leave it at that.

So talking about worthwhile text's I recently picked up a used recent copy of Physician's Drug Handbook 12th edtiion, published by Lipincott Williams and Wilkins, since I have ultra sensitivity to abxi and I have a natural curiosity about details of what is prescribed to me, and also a used copy of Mosby's Manual of Diagnostic and Laboratory Tests, third edition published by Mosby Elsevier and authored by Pagana and Pagana.  Both have been very helpful for me personally.

Norman, perhaps you have some suggestions for online reference websites that you feel are technically adaquate and references new or used that are worthwhile I would enjoy reading your list if you care to share one.

Best Regards,  Louise

Cynical? I don't mind in

Cynical? I don't mind in the slightest when pharmaceutical companies make a profit, even a big profit. Nor do I mind when, in pursuit of profit-making, they make sure that doctors and patients are fully informed about their wares. Pharmaceutical companies do a lot of good work. Few of the drugs we take would exist without them. I just find it a bit silly when it's suggested that they are acting against their financial interests, when they give away information about diseasesi and treatments -- treatments which often rely on something they sell. (And Louise, please note that this amusement was not directed at something you personally wrote, or even endorsed explicitly.)

As for websites, I tend to be partial to my own collection of articles, mostly by Steven B. Harris.
