Supplement Safety and Imports from China

Recent events regarding contamination of pet food with melamine-laced wheat gluten from China has brought the issue of food safety of imports to the forefront. NPR has run an article today concerning other issues about safety of food supplementsi. I did not know that most of the ascorbic acid we buy is imported from China. There is apparently only one US manufacturer of ascorbic acid. The ruthless price cutting by exporters from China has cornered the market for them. I will be looking into the sources of all the supplementsi I take. Doesn't do any good to be taking something to improve your health and end up poisoning yourself instead. Here's a link to the article: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=10410111

Call me an alarmist but, with such almost non-existant oversight from the FDA, I suspect the worst until I can get the facts. And our community consumes a huge amount of such supplements. I will check back in if I get more info about this.

You're the best! Thanks!

You're the best! Thanks! One of the reasons I buy from I Herb is because they genuinely seem to care about such things, but no one can be everywhere all the time, watching everything.

Yes, MacK, I appreciate

Yes, MacK, I appreciate that about iherb too.  They offer more information on their individual supplementsi than any other competitive vendor I've seen, including their sources.  Reading the details eats up time, but it pays off.  For instance, the brand name of dog food we feed our dogs was one of those brands named in the last recall.  However, the type was different.  I take the time to read the ingredients every time we buy it to make sure we are getting a wheat/gluten free formula.  Dogs weren't designed to digest carbohydrates, much less gluten.  It's difficult to find dog food that doesn't have wheat/gluten in it, but possible.  We would rather not settle for having to buy dog food with rice in it, but we do, because it's the least of evils compared to wheat, soy, and corn (in that order).  Occasionally we accept corn as an ingredient as long as it's not one of the main ingredients.  The ingredients are listed on the label in the order of greatest proportion to least proportion.

Thanks Raven, good to know,

Thanks Raven, good to know, I am going to check my Ester C & both of my suppliers Vitamin Research Products & American Nutrition.  Cheapest is not necessarily the best, that is for sure.

I have had pets all my life & fed kibble, but no more.  When I buried 2 dogs from liver cancer I believe that all the chemicals in their food doesn't help.  I fed an expensive kibble NutroMax.  My Irish Terrier, Stanley is a healthy happy boy & has been on raw diet since he was weaned (4 years now).  One of my clients makes dog & cat food dinner in raw, human grade food quality, frozen in convenient patties- no chemicals.  They have done the research with a veterinarian for the 80/20% meat to vegetable mix I buy.  Stanley's check ups are stellar & I think I have actually convinced the clinic with his great health.
