S.O.S -- Save On Supplements: What's your approach?

Here are some of my "cheats" that help a little.

  • Mail order, of course
  • Tablets are cheaper than capsules almost every time.
  • Fewer pills of higher potency are usually cheaper, easier to count, and easier to swallow (literally.)
  • Cod liver oil is cheap, cheap, cheap, and it's a good source of Vitamin Di and Omega-3 fatty acids. Not sure how to fit it into the regimen, what to replace with it, but it's a goodie. I'll try to see what we could replace with it.
  • Glucose tabs are expensive, 'cause they're medicine. "Smarties" are 100% glucose, and they taste better, too. Corn syrup is also 100% glucose, unless you get the fancy kind that they put HFCS in, then it's no use to us.
  • Raisins also have lots of glucose. Turns out they have lots of fructose, too. Sorry. Dates are a little better.

That's all I have for now, anyone have a cheat they can share?

Smarties are 100% Glucose?

Smarties are 100% Glucose? You've made my day. Wow, a justification for my addiction to them. I try not to keep bags in the house as I devour them and worry about feeding candida. But now they are "medicinal." Also, my daughter who has much the worse porphyriai likes them too.

One of my cheats is that CVS pharmacy has a high potency "B 150" which is a cheap source of the B complex vitamins, and two a day gives dosages in almost everything that Dr Powell wants. Often find 2 for price of 1 sales.

Cod liver oil? Ugg! Some internet vitamin stores have lower prices for automatic reordering (Vitamin Shoppe, Swansons, some others) so I have to take a look at this to compare.

I like the idea of compounding a flavorful liquid. There's a multi-vitamin powder I've used in the past which is relatively inexpensive, which one could use. I would be concerned about oxidation (antioxidantsi do this readily when in liquid form) and interactions while in liquid on the shelf.b Dr. Powell likes the "From Fatigued to Fantastic" powder mix for the general supplement coverage, but it's pricey. Maybe we could work a deal with the company for a cpnhelp discount if there's enough interest.

I've avoided having any commercial representation on this site, but if significant discount on supplementsi could be obtained, is there enough interest in having that kind of offer here, or does that distort our purpose?

I would be very pleased, if there is any good offer on this page. As some of supplementsi are not available in CR and the only way is to order it from foreign country and pay a very high price for them. I think nobody from here did it..I thought about local tips, for example it must be advantageous for people from west to order in Czech as nearly all prices are lower then in western Europe.

As far as offers here: I think we can link to them, but they shouldn't actually be made on this site.

Right now, part of the site's credibility stems from the fact that absolutely no one has anything to gain by anything they say here. I wouldn't want to lose that.

I used to be a Product Developer. When I went on customer calls, I absolutely would not talk about the costs, delivery, etc. of the product. As soon as I talked in those terms, I went from "technical advisor" to "peddler" and I couldn't go back! If I ever crossed that line, anything I said was evaluated as though I was financially interested in the view I expressed.

Let's say I were a Compounding Pharmacist, and I wanted to offer a liquid form of the protocol supplementsi. I would at most simply mention it here, with contact info, and let it go at that. Even better would be to contact anyone that had expressed an interest here privately, and let them decide whether to post to the site or not.

Ron- I think you are right.

Ron- I think you are right. Anything commercial, even a discount from a site to our members, raises the question of taint, and the trust level slides. We don't need any income beyond donations to run the site, and it's cheap. It was only around supplementsi, but we are an ingenious crowd and will find discounts as we need. My pledge: no commercial arrangements.

Glucosamine is available

Glucosamine is available much more cheaply as a powder than as a capi or tab. 1/2 tsp is around 2.5 grams, or about what we're supposed to take morning and evening. According to the reviews (bodybuilders down the stuff in doses 3x what we need) it's a "colorless, tasteless powder -- mix with water and drink."

Don't know if I have the same taster as a bodybuilder, but for the price difference, I'm game. Besides, once you've tasted Flagyli, how bad could the stuff possibly be?

In the US, glucose is often

In the US, glucose is often called "corn syrup" on product labels.  This is justified by the facts that (a) it comes as a syrup, and (b) it's made from corn -- in particular, from corn starch.  But of course the real reason is that "corn syrup" sounds better than "glucose" (or at least so the marketroids thought).

A similar product is "maltodextrin", which is basically the same stuff, except that the breaking down of the starch hasn't progressed so far, so it still consists mostly of polysaccharides.  But your gut very quickly completes the task, so nutritionally it's equivalent to glucose.

I just did a bunch of

I just did a bunch of looking at food labels.  It seems like the soft drink industry, which used to use a lot of "corn syrup", has shifted entirely to "high fructose corn syrup", which is about like sugar in its proportions of fructose and glucose.  And I don't understand the recommendation of Gatorade; all the Gatorade I could find on the shelves was sweetened with a combination of "sucrose syrup" and "glucose-fructose syrup", which again is about like sugar.  (And what's the "brominated vegetable oil" in there for?  Mere hydrogenation wasn't evil enough, so they decided to brominate it?  It was only in one of the flavors ("orange"), and then as the last ingredient, but still...)  It seems that if one wants a glucose meal from a normal food store, one should get something like bread and water.  (Or crackers, or rice, or some other starchy food; starches are quickly broken down to glucose in the gut.)

Glucosamine has very little

Glucosamine has very little taste at all. I don't think most people will notice it's there in a small glass of water, and the powder is cheaper than pills by quite a bit.

It doesn't dissolve very quickly, though -- more of a suspension; stir and drink immediately, or you'll leave part of the dose in the glass.
