Red Blood Cell Count

So, I'm 5 months into abxi treatment with azi and one thing my doc and I have noticed is that my RBC keeps dropping each time we get blood work done. I am now officially below normal. The doc doesn't seem terribly concerned. She says it's not unusual for this to happen because of the system being so heavily taxed by infection and abxi treatment. But I haven't heard anyone else here mention that problem. I've been taking "blood builder" supplementsi but it doesn't seem to be keeping up. For the most part I've been holding up but sometimes I can really feel it (lactic acid burn and shortness of breath just walking up 1 flight of stairs) and it's starting to worry me. Anyone else had this problem?

My RBCs were normal before I

My RBCs were normal before I started abxi, although I'm not on CAPi. They've been going down steadily since starting azi. I'm supposed to start a pulse of flagyli next week. Maybe that will help ... or do me in. :O

Sunni

I haven't been keeping track of red blood cell count but my doc regularly reports on something that sounds related - iron levels.  Mine are lower then normal but he shrugs each time he reports it as  they were lower when we first begin monitoring things and it hasn't changed.

all my best

Sunnivara, I have had low

Sunnivara, I have had low red blood cells count for a couple of years before I got acute Cpni infection. My idea is that I had a chronic Cpn infection that did not bother me too much but had gone down to the bone marrow, where the red cells are produced. After 3 years of abxi the count is improving. I take the occasion to ask if anybody can suggest for how long to take rifampin (I am now in the 10th day with not strong reactions). Should I have take doxyi instead as to give my liver a break? (though it seems in good condition). Nino: French Riviera, Cpn pneumonia june05 (misdiagnosed). Self diagnosed-treated. Now on Roxi 150mg bid,NACi, vitaminsi. Rifampin 300mg and Calc.Pyruvate.

Nino, Rifampin should be

Nino, Rifampin should be taken without a break for months. I did 16 months at the beginning, taking it twice a day. It should be taken seriously because of the possibility of resistance whivh can happen pretty quickly with this amazing drug. Be sure to keep taking your NACi. Now that I am so much better, my plan is to take it again starting this fall when things are less busy.

Rica PPMSi EDSSi 6.7 at beginning - now 2. Began CAPi Sept, 2004 with Rifampin 150 mg 2xd, Doxyi 100 mg 2xd, added regular pulses Jan 2005. Jan 2006 switched to Doxy, Azith, cont. flagyli total 51 pulses NC USA

RBC is going back up as of

RBC is going back up as of the most recent labs. It's still only barely within normal range but at least it's heading in the right direction. Yay!
