Who here has thyroid problems?

My Dr. thinks I have a subclinical thyroid problem along with my infectionsi [1] that has never been treated. I have had a few instances of Shortness of breath when laying down and sweats, flushing to chills, constipation, itchy scalp and weight fluctuation from 165pds to 190 pds (though I look much healthier now). The only tests that were abnormal a while back were my reverse T3 tests which were low I believe. She thinks I have a "variable thyroid" that swings both ways. Has anyone else had this? I know many with Lyme, Cpni [2], Mycoplasma, have thyroid problems but how do you tell the difference between the two? Do they improve with just abxi [3] treatment over time? They initially thought all my problems were thyroid related when I first became ill in 2000 and did a PET scan which showed a small nodule on my thyroid. A follow up ultrasound showed a very small cyst that they felt was too small to remove, but now that I think about it, who knows? Maybe I should have seen a specialist? Any thoughts on this? Thanks! Chris

Hi,I've had thyroid

Submitted by gkirilova on Thu, 2008-07-17 12:08.

Hi,

I've had thyroid problems for a long time.  I have CFSi [8] and Cpni [2] infection.  Hypothyroidism is so common that it's scary.  I'm on a high dose of Armour and helps me function much better.  However my tests came back NORMAL.  One thing you need to know is that thyroid test ARE NOT ACCURATE!!!   You need to rely on your symptoms and not your tests.  If you google "thyroid test innacurate"  you'll find lots of info on that.  My dr is giving me thyroid meds based on my symptoms not my test results.  For some reason hypothyroidsm and CFS/Cpn seem to go hand in hand.  I think that the infectionsi [1] cause a domino effect of hormonal, immunei [9] imbalances and more.  I've heard this sooo many times.  I've also had the out of breath experience.  It is awful.  My body also couldn't regulate my body temp.  I've lost a lot of weight since going on my meds.  You need those meds.  It is no cure.  As you said...hypothyroidism is just a symptom of the infections but it will improve the quality of your life.

Hope this helps.

it was my very forward out

Submitted by ruthless1 on Thu, 2008-07-17 12:21.

it was my very forward out of the box thinker Doc who was treating my old injuries who had me take my temp for 2 weeks before rising, noonish & then when I go to bed.  It was astounding how low my temps were!  He is not my doc now as he too has ME & has been off with it!

No wonder I was feeling like crap.  Anyway, he started me on Armour but I developed some resistance to it.

My new doc who has been supporting me through this treatment says there is a cyst on my thyroid as well.  He put me on cytomel & I am on a  special compounded thyroid med specifically for my test results which he is pretty acquainted with as this is secondary hypothyroidism here.

I still get the chills & cold but that is more from the die off I believe.

I did the same

Submitted by gkirilova on Thu, 2008-07-17 12:29.

I did the same thing....taking my temp.  It was also low.  No wonder I wore sweats in summer!!  I was cold constantly besides muscle pain and feeling like I had been hit by a train.  Another good test for hormones that I took that is more accurate than blood test is:

My hormones were completely out of whack.  My mom who was going through menopause had a more normal hormone test than I did at age 27!!!  It helped to open my eyes to what was really going on in my body.

Hi Chris, I've always

Submitted by Reenie on Thu, 2008-07-17 12:39.

Hi Chris,

I've always tested hypo (low) but there are folks with Hashimoto's (the body creates antibodies which destroy its own thyroid) that swing both up and down. Depending on how much you want to explore your thyroid issues, which can be a big part of feeling ill, you can have an endocrinologist test you for thyroid antibodies.

Dr Teitelbaum along with many other Drs will treat with a trial of thyroid replacement (usually Armour thyroid) even when tests are within normal lab range if the patient has other sxs of low thyroid function such as low body temperature which I always have even on replacement.  I wonder if those of us with this issue have more low body temp during die off than some.

I posted HERE [15] recently about thyroid meds and there are other comments as well. You may also want to try using the Iodoral supplement which seems to be bringing my thyroid function up and I'm able to lower thyroid replacement. Smile

Thanks for the comments. Does anyone know of a thyroid specialist in Southern California who is educated in the infection theory? I will also check with my Dr. Chris

Here is my saga briefly:)I

Submitted by arthritic on Thu, 2008-07-17 12:41.

Here is my saga briefly:)

I have a hypoT Hashimoto's. Looking back I could date the start of my symptoms to late teen years. Then in my 20s I had first real uncomfortable sxi [19] like racing heart, BP spikes, fatigue, brain fog, panic attacks. It was all gone in a year. In mid-30s x developed again and gradually increased. Mainly brain fog, weight gain, bradycardia, dry skin, ect. It took me 3 years to get dx b/c my tests would come back normal range. However, my TSH was in the top of the normal range which would be abnormal for some other contries. So I pushed eventually for additional testing and a new dr did antibodies tests which was (+) as well. I did u/s in a radiology place and the result was normal. Next month I went for a consult with a local professor in a university and he did u/s himself as well. His result was that a good half of my thyroid was destroed. He said one has to have an extensive experience to perform and read thyroid u/s and that's possibly why my first scan results were wrong. Anyway I was put on Synthroid then and it helped me tremendously.
