is rifampicin turning my teeth brown?

  • Cpn treatment experiences

7 weeks into treatment and I have noticed the last 10 days that the backs of my front teeth are turning a disgusting shade of brown.  Rifampicin causes orange urine and reddish tears that will stain contacts.  With salivary glands being under the tongue at the front of mouth, does it seem likely that the rifampicin is causing this horrible and worrying discolouring of my teeth?

Anyone else had this?  Is it permanent?

Other people have reported other antibiotics affecting the colour of their teeth, but I had not heard about Rif having that effect before, but anything is possible.

With other ABXi [4] people have managed to removed the stains, either by visiting the dental hygenist, using an electric toothbrush or a product.

I started having this about

Submitted by jeanneroz on Mon, 2008-07-07 10:31.

I started having this about 6 months into treatment.... I use a sonic toothbrush and it does NOT remove it.  I have a new dentist (who is holistic).  She stated (as we all probably know) that the LT abxi [4] is changing the PH balance in my mouth.  This also falls into the biofilms category.

I have the brown behind my top and bottom teeth, as well as it starts showing between my teeth.  Up close it looks like a bunching of brown specks.  I have started using Biotene mouthwash and may start using the toothpaste as well.  My dentist will be fitting me for a mouthpiece to wear 2x's per day to treat my teeth and gums with a couple of agents.  She is hoping that will also improve the ph balance and this problem.  I brush and floss at least 2x's per day and go for cleanings every 6 months.

I just had my teeth cleaned less than a month ago and it is back...... it's very annoying and looks disgusting.  (of course I notice it more than other people!)  I've not taken Rifampicin..... just doxyi [7], azith and Tinii [11]...

Jeanneroz  Nope, Rifampin

Submitted by farandwide on Mon, 2008-07-07 14:33.

Nope, Rifampin hasn't caused any issues like that although on rare occasion, have noticed the orange urine.  I think I must drink ample amounts of water so that it doesn't become an issue.

The one thing that has stained my teeth at times is a sublingual B12 I used to take.  I would take up to 15 grams each day, so I constantly had it in my mouth.  I've switched over to another brand that isn't sublingual and the problem has gone away.

The first year I was on the

Submitted by Reenie on Mon, 2008-07-07 14:55.

The first year I was on the MPi [17] I began having what looked like alot more tartar buildup but it was brown colored.  Other MPers had the same thing from the minocycline and some of the other antibioticsi [4].  It seems that when I looked up info on plaque, it has to do with the ph of your mouth but it also has to do with how much bacteria you have.  There were alot of others that developed the excess brown stained tartar too and I think it had to do more with die off than actually teeth staining as it seems to be treatable from the discussions we had about it and my personal experience.

It resolved over time but I'm not sure if it actually would have resolved on its own or that I am using a different technique for cleaning my teeth at home, in between cleaning appts which I get every 3 months.  (have kept this schedule for years due to gum issues) The hygenist noticed the worsening and improving of my teeth tartar and staining and the only thing I changed are the products I use to clean my teeth, not how or when or even what I'm eating really.

When I did some research on the tartar and stain buildup, I found that the mouthwashes that contain a good amount of plaque fighter is Scope.  It's the same active ingredient that you can find in Crest's Pro Health mouth rinse.  I rinse before and after brushing and this seems to help alot.  I just recently began using a new toothpaste that I love as well.  It works almost as good as  professional cleaning and my hygenist said she uses it too.  It's called Crest Pro Health toothpaste. Laughing

I also have this staining

Submitted by jennie riley on Tue, 2008-07-08 04:50.
I also have this staining of my teeth but i think it is due to the vit b we have to take not the abxi [4]'s. Tetracyclines cause permant staining of teeth in chldren but not in adults as far as i have read. I use a sonic toothbrush to no avail. I am going to my dentist for a clean and polish, i thínk that that regular cleaning and polishíng is the only answer to the problem, but if anyone knows different please let me know. Jen

From the sounds of this it is a superficial problem that could be reversed with a whitening agent.  I would ask my dentist about this, and use a mild solution so as not to cause tooth or gum sensitivity.

Hi, Twickle... if it were

Submitted by jeanneroz on Tue, 2008-07-08 13:15.

Hi, Twickle... if it were just a vanity issue, I am sure whitening would probably " bleach it" but not remove it (it is like brown plaque and comes off with a dental pick).

I am more concerned as to "why" the  health of my mouth has changed; i.e. the imbalance of the PH in my mouth caused by the bacteria/ABXi [4](?) and try to correct it the best I can (so therefore not superficial, at least to me).

I don't want my teeth to start falling out during the few years I am on CAPi [6]Sealed

Reenie, I am using this [22] (Biotene placque biofilm disolving mouthwash) per a recommendation of someone here on the site (can't remember who!).

Jeanneroz, That's exactly

Submitted by Reenie on Tue, 2008-07-08 14:06.

Jeanneroz,

That's exactly what I and others had an increase of as we began the abxi [4] on the MPi [17]. It seems it's not actually teeth staining but increase in tartar/plaque buildup and it's brown which needs to be removed by a professional cleaning. I had this for nearly a year or more and when I googled it back then (sorry, didn't save all of the info) found that the active ingredient in a few of the mouthwashes (maybe it's in the one you're using?) have been tested against this bacterial buildup which causes this.

The active ingredient is Cetylpyridinium Chloride [23] which is called an antigingivitis/antiplaque. If you look at the references in that link there are some links to info about staining and treatment.

BTW, it says that this product can CAUSE staining on the teeth (in a small amt of folks) but I have only seen dramatic improvements when using products containing this ingredient rather than any increase. Smile  It's one of the ingredients in Scope mouthwash so I switched from Listerine which contains mostly alcohol and burns alot more but doesn't work as well.  Undecided

HERE's [24] a link for Crest Pro Health which explains how these products work.

It seems to me that the excess die off of bacteria due to the abxi [25] is most likely causing this and so a blessing in disguise! Innocent

I too have had the plaque

Submitted by ruthless1 on Tue, 2008-07-08 15:38.

I too have had the plaque build up (that is wwhat the hygenist called it)  Pre capi [6] my mouth was very good - had cleaning every 2 - 3 years.  Now, it is required every 6 months.

I have some Tea Tree too picks I I have found that along with flossing, electric tooth brush, the plaque is down to a dull roar.

I was all freaked out about it before my last cleaning in Jan. because, for me, it was disgusting.  The hygenist reassured me my teeth won't fall out as long as we do the cleanings.

peace
