Sci-fi

I saw that this formum can be about other things besides our health so I thought I would see if there are any sci-fi people out there. I watch a lot of tv (I know!) because I can numb out and forget about how I feel for a little while. I love Stargate, Dr. Who, especially Battlestar Galactica (hate this is the last year), anything sci-fi. Don't like the horror stuff much and sometimes it's hard to get the sci-fi without some of the horror/gore. I love the sci-fi channel but they have too much gore. My husband really likes to watch the Saturday night movies they have because they are so stupid! Bad acting, fake blood, hungry monsters, etc. We like to make words up for the actors to say which is very entertaining sometimes. Remember that Mystery Science theater show in the 80's?? They did the same thing with silly sci-fi movies. Oh, we also loved Farscape. Why is it that when we get into a show they cancel it!!! We liked Moonlight on CBS and are really mad about that cancellation. Also, Invasion was good and the one about the little boy and the sea monster - Surface. I love anything to do with Superman so have watched Smallville since the beginning.

Also movies - saw Iron Man and it was great! Want to see Hancock and Dark Knight and Hellboy 2.

Lynn, I am SO not into sci-fi, though i am sure you will find lots of people on this website v. excited by your post! i have been introduced to Spiderman and Superman by my son (aged 5) so that is a bit of fun i haven't found too awful - apart from all the monsters ......

the only sci-fi thing i liked as a child was Lost In Space, I just enjoyed the campyness of it all (ha, ha, so advanced) , plus the see-through Amusing Coward, was it the doctor? i can't remember.

But Dr Who, Space Trek, sorreee just don't get it.....

blackfoot, did you ever see the Lost in Space movie with William Hurt. Kind of got crazy weird at the end but most of it was entertaining. I started watching sci-fi/scary movies at 3 yrs old. My father told me I would stand behind the den door and peak out to watch the old King Kong movie. I would hide behind the door when I got scared.

I'm quite into Sci-fi, but mostly I love the super heros, superman and the early Smallville episodes, not so fond of the darker ones. Lately I loved watching the Spiderman movies. Stargate is good but not so fond of Stargate Atlantis. I remember Lost in Space but why is it that the sly/bad/cowardly characters always speak with an English accent?

Maybe because the accent makes it more fun. Remember, Dr. Who is David Tennant and he's a good guy. I remember watching Dr. Who when I was a kid in black and white. Didn't care for it much. Dr. Who is cheesy fun to me now. Also, isn't Patrick Stewart british - played Capt Picard on Next Gen. He was a good guy, also played Xavier in X-men - good guy. I had a lot of comic books of Superman, superboy, supergirl, fantastic four, etc when I was a kid. Too bad I don't have them now. Smallville has grown up - had to happen sooner or later. I admit the earlier ones were fun. Xena was fun in the beginning but got very dark when Calisto showed up. We both watched Xena and Hercules. I loved Greek mythology growing up so love those kind of shows.

Hi lynnP fellow Sci-Fi fan. I'm with ya. Don't like the bloody gory horror type either. But enjoyed Star Trek especially the ones with Patrick Stewart. He is a talented actor for sure. Saw X-men also ... waiting for next one ... the bad guy lives on so there has to be one right? Loved the first Spiderman movie but sequels not quite as much.

Hey. Speaking of funny Sci-Fi do you remember seeing Doctor Low starring Tony Randall. That movie gives me belly laughs and is a favorite. Another gifted actor.

I loved Superman as a kid but didn't get into the Smallville TV show. Even though Heroes is a bit gory for my taste I watched the series and don't think I missed any. It was intriguing with all the twists and turns. I really thought the first Matrix movie was exciting and fresh with all the tech-o advances, etc. Keenan is easy on the eyes too. <wink> The second one wasn't as captivating but still good enough.

Just watched the Golden Compass and thought Nicole Kidman was absolutely evil in it. My tastes border on fantasy action & adventure more than strictly pure Sci-Fi. Loved the Lord of the Ring series and CS Lewis stories are favorites ... Lion, Witch & Wardrobe, etc. Looking forward to Prince Caspian.

Loved the Star Wars series ... a family fav. Recently saw Stardust ... enjoyed Robert De Niro as Capt. Shakespeare at any rate. Michelle Pfiffer was a wicked witch to which I found to be humorous at best.

Yes, I remember Dr. Low - was it The 7 faces of Dr. Lao? Seen Stardust, love matrix - 1st one the best - 3rd one crazy. 1st Spiderman the best. Haven't seen the Golden Compass because it's about demons and was written by an atheist. My church told us about it. But, hey I watch the Harry Potter movies! Absolutely love all Lord of the Rings and was sad when the last one was over! Hugh Jackman is making a wolverine movie just about that character from Xmen. He is handsome. Saw Narnia and loved it, haven't seen Prince Caspian yet but it's been out for a while. Star Wars great, Star Trek movies great (some of them are not to great though). Did you watch Xena and Hercules? They were fun. I like fantasy too. Oh, Merlin with Sam Neill was fantastic - I'm sure you've seen it? I like Nicole Kidman - did you see her in the Others? Spooky! Yep. You got it! That's what I meant to say. It's an oldie but goodie. One of our sons does a great imitation of Dr. Loa that has had us in stitches everytime.

Oh yeh, enjoyed the Harry Potter movies too. Yeh, well ... lots of shows/movies have demon like entities, etc. I don't recommend such movies for the impressionable sort but I believe they are okay for the mature audience grounded in their beliefs, etc.

I watched some of the Xena & Hercules shows but wasn't crazy about them so lost interest quickly. Disappointed too as I enjoyed the Hercules movies when I was a kid. For sure saw Merlin the epic movie. It was very good but not as great as I had hoped.

Oh, I also was into Babylon 5 for awhile years ago but the scheduling got messed up so I missed too many segments and gave up on it. Same with Galatica. Don't know why they do that more & more often to the viewing audience.

Do you recall the movie producer that made the JRR Tolkein movies? I think his last name is Jackson. Anyway, he is brilliant! I think I read somewhere he is working on another movie so I want to find out what it will be since I love his incredible work.

No, (laughing) I don't do "spooky" so didn't see Others. Too much sitting on the edge of your seat isn't my thing. (again I'm laughing) When I watched Jurassic Park I was physically exhausted when done.

This is totally off genre but I also love all the Jane Austin books/movies and other period movies. I am a bit eclectic I am afraid.

Patrick Stewart is a Tyke

Patrick Stewart is a Tyke (a Yorkshire man) and also a very good Shakespearean actor.

However there is a tendency in Hollywood now to cast Brits as the baddy, probably because it's too controversial to cast other nationalities, in case they are offended. We are too thick skinned to be offended and are delighted that we are no longer cast as the archetypal cissy.

I warn you that some of the later episodes of Dr Who have had darker storylines recently, but the production values have risen a lot too. David Tennant is currently regenerating - or so we are lead to believe - and we have to wait for the next episode to see what, or Who happens.

I agree about the termination of Farscape, it's a bummer when that happens and I also thought that StarTrek Voyager was the best of the StarTreks but that was cancelled too. Maybe it was a little too intelligent for the networks.

Pete Jackson! I love the period movies too - Vanity Fair, Great Expectations, etc. Love the jurrasic park movies too. When I mentioned Battlestar Galactica I meant the new one on Sci-Fi - well 4 years now. It's very dark but I think the acting has been great. Hate to see it end. Did you watch Alien Nation? That was good too.

I heard that Dr. Who was changing because Tennant wanted off the show. I really liked Chris Eggleston and was sad to see him go.

LynnP, Carol is Speedbird, and it was she who I was responding to, as she snuck one sentence in there about the doctor regenerating. I had no idea Torchwood was a spinoff and thought it was a cowboy western, by its title (so close to "Deadwood"), so I never sought it out. Now I have to go find it... I'm thinking, as the doctor's daughter (who was lovely, by the way) survived, we'll be seeing her in a series soon, too.

I watched most of the first season of Torchwood but the sex distracts from the sci-fi aspect and seemed to get in the way of the stories. It got to be too much for me. If I wanted to watch a show about sex I would watch Sex and the City or something similar. I quit watching it. I'm not into same sex on my sci-fi shows. I know that US tv is somewhat edited in that dept. Don't they show much more sex in the UK? Not that I'm a prude - I grew up in the 70's! Hot pants, Jimi Hendrix, etc. Wish I felt that young now. Youth is wasted on the young isn't it!

Louise, I don't know if this suits your taste but I've watched "Men in Black" any number of times and it still cracks me up. It's the sort of diversion one needs when pulsing. Also, funny English books like those by John Mortimer and Evelyn Waugh.

On another note, I used to love reading sci-fi when it was more humanistically oriented. I don't like fantasy and I don't like gee-whiz futuristic computer stuff. The only sci-fi author that I've liked of late has been Octavia Butler. Any recommendations people?

All I've read is that David Tennant will leave in 2009. I don't know if he's got anything lined up. There is another good BBC show, Primeval. They just showed the 1st season in the states but they have a 2nd and 3rd season. We really like it.

I think that you are probably getting the same ones as us by now and we are waiting for the Christmas episodes in which I think that Tennant is still the Doctor. He has just finished a drama about Arthur Eddington, the astrophysicist who championed the theories of Albert Einstein - sounds heavy to me, Heroes is more my cup of tea at the moment.

I liked Heroes more the first and second season. The beginning of this one was confusing. I think they waited too long because of the writer's strike. I'm just now getting into it again. Has anyone seen Fringe? It kind of reminds me of the xfiles which I like. (I liked the 1st xfiles movie. The second one was really weird but some of the shows were really weird but the movie was a little too much). Fringe is kind of crazy but I can't wait to find out what all the secrets are that they are hiding.
