  • Pneumoia

Yesterday we had a family birthday party for my mother's sister who turned 99 years young. She is an amazingly healthy woman. Not a bit overweight, stands straight and works in her garden every day. My mother by contrast is 13 years younger and suffers from a myriad of health problems. The difference is striking. Mom lived for many years with my father who was seriously infected with Cpni [1]. She now suffers from re-occurring respiratory infectionsi [2], arthritis, osteoporosis and fatigue. And refuses to go on the CAPi [3].

But what I wanted to write about was some news that my cousin (auntie's son) brought to the party. It was in a magazine put out by Life Extension. He has a strong interest in Aubrey De Grey's work and his Methuselah Foundation (and the Methuselah Mouse Prize)and had just returned from a conference they held at UCLA. Every time we get together, we share info about supplementsi [4] and such.

Here's a very interesting supplement that I did not know about. It's the extract from a fern that grows in Central and South America.I am very interested in it because I was looking for something to prevent skin cancer. Two years ago I had some pre-cancerous cells removed from my face. Now it seems I may have to have more work done in the same area. Here's a link:

Life Extension sells a brand called FernBlock.

"The mechanism of action of PLE is fairly complex but has been summarized into the following main points:

  • PLE acts as a scavenger to mop up free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS), particularly superoxide anions (these high energy molecules cause direct cell damage and have long been associated with all types of cancer)
  • PLE inhibits the depletion of Langerhans cells
  • PLE reduces the number of sunburn cells
  • PLE protects DNA by inhibiting the formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (cancer-causing cells) induced by UVB radiation
  • PLE preserves skin tissue structure by inhibiting the infiltration of mast cells into skin (mast cells release chemicals in the body that cause inflammationi [6], redness and itching)"

On another site some info about:

"In animal and test tube studies, Polypodium leucotomos has been found to inhibit immunei [7] factors called cytokinesi [8], particularly the cytokines associated with autoimmune diseasesi [9]. In small amounts, cytokines are needed for proper healing. But if overproduced, they can cause inflammation and tissue damage."

Seems like another supplement for reducing inflammation. So I think I will send away for some and try it out.

And I would imagine, this supplement might be of interest to those with Rosaceai [16]? Raven

Raven, Sorry to hear you

Raven, Sorry to hear you may have to dive into that pool again, but no dragging your heels, missy! One of my office mates was just called back for more work after delaying removing some lesions much longer than he should have... about a minute after the biopsy results landed on the doctor's desk. We don't want you in the same boat.

Going to look at the fern stuff right now. I've been really lax about sunscreen, as I tan quickly. Bad MacKintosh. Bad.
