I need some Doxy advice.
By Todybear

I have been taking Doxyi [1] since May 1st, 100 mg. I have added Azith on May 12th. I was fine with the Doxy for a couple weeks, then it started to cause some terrible nausea even vomitting for the hour after taking it. I was taking it on an empty stomach initially with no problems. I have started to take it with food but I am concerned that it will make the drug less effective. The pharmacist told me to take it on an empty stomach. My husband was suggesting that if it is die off maybe over time I will not have the vomitting reaction to it. I was wondering if I should continue to take it on empty stomach or should I take it with food and if I do take it with food, does that reduce it's efficacy?

Hi Todybear!

Here in Sweden they say take Doxyi [1] with food.( to prevent stomach problem). Im reading from paper that comes with the medicin.

So it must be effective with food.

Good luck with treatment, hope you feel better soon!

Best Wishes,

Maria

  Tody, don't worry: I [7]

Submitted by Sarah on Mon, 2008-05-19 10:47.

Tody, don't worry: I always took it with food, I couldn't take it any other way.  The instructions might say to take it on an empty stomach, although mine didn't, I've still got a leaflet here.  But you will be taking it every day for a long time, not as a quick ten day course..........Sarah

An Itinerary in Light and Shadow...........Completed Stratton/Wheldon regime for aggressive secondary progressive MSi [8] in June 2007, after nearly four years, three of which intermittent.   Still slowly improving and no exacerbation since starting. EDSSi [9] was 7, now 2, less on a good day.

If you take it on an empty

Submitted by BobO on Mon, 2008-05-19 11:19.

If you take it on an empty stomach...your stomach will remain empty. I very rarely get sick when taking meds, so I completely ignored the advice. Well...I fed the birds in the back yard, if you get my meaning. Frown

Take it with food, and stay

Submitted by Michele on Mon, 2008-05-19 11:24.

Take it with food, and stay upright for at least 30mins (in other words don't take it just before bed).   I often think that people/informaion leaflets say: 'take this on an empty stomach' as it a safety catchall, less likely to have interaction problems with other substances and more likely to be absorbed into the system more quickly.   But better absorbed than 'feeding the birds'.

I also take it with food. I

Submitted by Andesine on Mon, 2008-05-19 17:39.

I also take it with food. I have the food first, then the Doxyi [1]. Doesn't have to be much, piece of fruit, biscuit and a drink. I take all my morning supps first as well so I have downed quite a bit of water before the abxi [15] hit my stomach.

I made the mistake last week of taking the Doxy first then eating. Bleurch!

My leaflet also says take with food and remain upright for 30 minutes afterwards.

Berkshire, UK. Diagnosed RRMSi [14] Feb 4th 2008.

No GP/Neuroi [10] support. Self medicating with help from David Wheldoni [17].
Started CAPi [12] 20th April 2008.

My printout from the

Submitted by Todybear on Mon, 2008-05-19 19:31.

My printout from the pharmacy said that the drug should be taken two to three hours apart from suppliments like vitaminsi [18], minerals, calcium, magnesium, antacids etc because they react with doxycycline preventing its full absorption. I take my suppliments in the morning then my Doxy in the afternoon to that end.

Calcium and magnesium have

Calcium and magnesium have that effect on most things, so take them apart from the other stuff. (I take cal, mag, B complex and melatonini [19] shortly before bed.)
