I got very excited when I read David's notation in Farandwide's thread on Porphyriai [1]: http://www.cpnhelp.org/porphyria [2]
Kim's been having die-off reactions and I came here first. She's been taking about 2500mg of charcoal at night, I haven't figured out how to decipher Oregano Oil, and then I came across David's post - Thank you David.
I added a link to the paper David referenced and info on the dosage for Tagamet. I'm still not sure of the dosage and timing for cimetidine and I found some more info here that I thought ought to be in a single post to make it easier to find.
I was surprised to read Louise's post that notes that Flagyl says to consult your doctor before taking Flagyl with Tagamet: http://www.cpnhelp.org/metronidazole_flagyl_pati [3]
I also found Jim K's post of a portion of the Stratton/Mitchell patent that recommends 400mg of Tagamet/Cimetidine once or twice a day: http://www.cpnhelp.org/secondary_porphyria_in_cp [4]
Thank you Jim K for your post, it was very helpful!
So, Question 1 is, is anyone taking Tagamet and if so, how do you work it around the Flagyl? Do you need to work it around Rifampin and Azithromycin too?
I suppose I don't know what question 2 is ... maybe more generally how's it working for you? Should Kim try this? Ken

Hi Ken, You could check this [6] out. And here [7] is a link that I think answers another of your questions...

I'm not the best person to answer these questions... I know not a lot about science of things. Someone the other day when talking about the action of Rifampin that its action on antibioticsi [14] was not an issue as there was a wide margin of effectiveness factored into the dosage. Maybe the same applies to Tagamet.
Here is another link [16] that gives information about it, maybe you can PM Basil about it.

The only time I took
The only time I took cimetidine was at a time when porphyria was making me so ill that none of the other measures worked. I'm not sure whether my method would be recommended but for a week I stopped all antibiotics and supplementsi [5] while I took the cimetidine alone.
Now, my recovery on this occasion could have been due to taking the full dose of cimetidine for a week or it may have been from stopping the abxi [14] and therefore slowing down the porphyrin release from die off .....who knows, I can't explain the science but it worked for me at a time when when nothing else would.

I e-mailed Dr. Sriram and Wheldon to ask about Tagamet. Neither Dr. Sriram or Dr. Wheldon recommended continuing with it for porphyriai [1]. I ran out and bought Kim a bottle of Glucose tablets at CVS. I think we noticed (with Tagamet) a slight improvement in comfort during the pulse, but we would rather not risk anything that might compromise the effectiveness of the Flagyli [11]. Ken
