Glucose/D-Ribose/Calcium Pyruvate????????

I hope John (farandwide) doesn't mind, but I thought I would bring up a question he asked a week ago in someone's blog.

I quote -

You touch on something that had crossed my mind to bring up, so I'll use this opportunity to do so.  My understanding is D-Ribose/Ribose is for energy production; however, the lingering question is whether it might provide some assistance with porphyriai [1] as glucose does.  For that matter, whether Pyruvate might also help.  Both are involved in supplementing the process leading to ATP, so I wonder if they might be alternative therapies to deal with Porphyrins.

End of quote.

My question is very similar:-

For the people who cannot currently take glucose, other than giving extra ATP energy, can D-ribose and Calcium Pyruvate alleviate porphyria symptoms in place of glucose?

Thanks

Mark

Hi Mark

Hi Mark

Thanks for re-posting my question.  I did see that you bumped the thread I posted this on last week, or was it the week before?  Sorry that nobody here really knows for certain what the answer is.

My take on it after thinking about it for a bit is that Ribose is a different sugar then Glucose.  As such, its activity with the liver (where I believe much of the porphyrins are generated) is different.  It's similar to the difference between Glucose and Sucrose in that Sucrose doesn't have the same affect as Glucose.

Likewise, I think that Pyruvate also doesn't have the same activity with the body's cells.  I think that it bypasses the process that produces ASP; however, in so bypassing the ATP process, it doesn't turn it off as Glucose does.  The signal that would produce Glucose and porphyrins is still active, still turned on.

Consequently, I don't think that either Ribose or Pyruvate have any affect on the production of porphyrins.  I believe that these are energy producing but do nothing to circumnavigate the ATP process the way Glucose can.

Just my take on it, possibly incorrect, but just an educated guess.

all my best

Yes, I do believe D-ribose

Submitted by sharon on Sun, 2008-04-06 15:42.

Yes, I do believe D-ribose can help alleviate some porphyins symtpoms. couple of months back,  and when I was using flagy for pulses, I started a blog.  something to the effect of 'd-ribose in my godsend'..  I have not tried calcium pyruvate yet..

Glucose can be used by the

Submitted by Elinor on Sun, 2008-04-06 15:44.

Glucose can be used by the body to make D-ribose and D-ribose can be converted by the body to glucose, it can also use it to form pyruvate and ATP.

From reading about the different responses people have to taking D-ribose it's my guess that whether it works well or not depends on the status of all the other requirements needed for energy production, magnesium for example, coQ10, carnitine and B3.  It would seem that it's another one of those things you just have to try for yourself as some people swear by it and some just don't get anywhere.

I've found that large amounts of glucose work to get porphyriai [1] under control and D-ribose works as an everyday measure to keep it at bay as well as give me energy.. If you do a search you'll find  we've had discussions on this before, there might be some more info you'll find useful

Thanks John, Sharon and

Thanks John, Sharon and Elinor.  We have D-ribose on the "to do list" for Paula already and have a supply ready, saying as she has a problem with glucose.

If she doesn't have any noticeable energy improvement with this or she has adverse reactions to it, we will try Pyruvate.

Cheers,

Mark
