The Things We Cannot Avoid...
By kitkat2
Created 02/23/2008 - 8:08pm

I want to share that my very vibrant father passed away today. He was a fighter though until the end. He was 86. I am remembering fondly how he was the always optimistic rock of our family, a lark who was always whistling happily even when my dear mother, God rest her, was worried or anxious about something. I adopted that way of life when I was blessed with my three children, even since the msi [1] diagnosis six years ago and throughout the past 2.5 years on the CAPi [2]. It has been challenging especially when they see me seeming much worse, like today for example; fraught with grief I cannot get either of my legs to bend at all and I am feeling scared. If only I could get these darn muscles to relax. Anger and fear...that is what I feel, but mostly very very sad. -kk2

KK2, I can't begin to tell

Submitted by katman on Sat, 2008-02-23 21:25.
KK2, I can't begin to tell you how sad I am. A good father is a wonder, and you appreciated him. And you know he loved you, as we who had a wonderful father know. (It has been 50 years since my own father died and here I sit with tears down my face as though it were last week.) Enjoy your memories and your children - your crisis will pass and your legs will bend again.

KK2, I'm so sorry. It is sobering for me as my father will be 86 next month and my parents have been begging me to visit them in Florida. But I'm not well enough to travel and so I keep telling them to hold on until I'm better. Of course you're very very sad and broken.  And your body is connected to your soul -- neither can move right now.  But tomorrow you will run with your grandchildren.

He sounds like a wonderful man. Thank you for sharing all that you have, about him, with us. I hope you will be feeling physically better, soon.

KK2, These painful goodbyes

Submitted by Michèle on Sun, 2008-02-24 02:26.

KK2, These painful goodbyes are another rock along the bumpy road.   You will never loose your memories of the active, optimistic man that made a difference to the world.   His life after the stroke would not have been the same and although he would have born it with courage and dignity it would have been sad for his loved ones to see him reduced to infirmity.

Regarding the legs, I remember Sarah telling me once that the only times her legs would not work properly was when she was emotionally upset, so take heart on that account.   Time heals things, both grief and legs.   Consider yourself group hugged....

Loss of a loved one,

Submitted by Andesine on Sun, 2008-02-24 04:55.

Loss of a loved one, especially a parent, knocks you for six whether you're ill or not. My father died in 1974 when I was 18 and the shock sent my thyroid condition into overdrive.

The grief will subside and as your father was such a rock, you'll find you'll eventually just be left with happy memories of him which will be more of a comfort than a source of pain.

Submitted by Daisy on Sun, 2008-02-24 08:45.

 KK -

Having lost my grandfather, my mother-in-law and 16 yr old dog all in the past 60 days, I feel your pain and sorrow.  No matter how old you are - to lose your daddy is painful.  My Mom is still reeling pretty hard from the loss of my grandfather Jan 31 and he was 96 yrs old.

I have found for me at least it's been very important to be gentle with myself and to give myself time each day as needed to greive.  Some days I sit on my bed and look at pictures.  Lots and lots of pictures of happy times leaving me with fresher happier memories of those I have lost.

My thoughts and prayers with you and your family.

Please be kind to yourself KK and let others help and comfort you - this one is a very hard thing.

KK2,  My father was the pillar of strength for our family, had a terrific sense of humor, and we thought he was indestructible.  He was a major part of my underpinning.  Minai's words strike a chord for me especially.  Our fathers live on in our memories, and their legacies are the underpinnings that continue to hold us up long after they are gone.  Allow yourself to grieve, know that he is still with you, and go on to face life's challenges with him in your underpinning.  Bless you and your family,

Submitted by Karl on Tue, 2008-02-26 18:32.
KK2, All the best. Stay on course and know we are all here for you. Stay strong above it all. I wrote this back in '95. It always helped to keep me going ...... and be peaceful when the times are rough. I have travelled with silver moons over many nights in order to rest my spirit with yours, to find where you have been led, to find peace amid your hands. I shall ever strive in my heart when the doves take me to fly into headlong winds of life above the trials of each day. And, when my chest aches, I'll know it is your spirit calling on me to live with the passion of peace, in mind and heart... given by the doves effortlessly... beautifully.......... Karl 9/95

KitKat,

My sympathy for the loss of your beloved father.  I lost my father in 1996.  His favorite bird was the Meadow Lark.  I remember as a child when he recorded the Meadow Lark song on a reel to reel tape deck and then slowed the the speed down so we could hear all the notes clearly.  On the day of his funeral there was a Meadow Lark sitting on an electrical wire above the cemetary singing.  I knew that he was there!  I have noticed that my MS symptoms always worsen during times of stress but improve as my stress reduces.

Blessings to you and your family

Tina
