Dr. Powell has been applying his protocol to his particular patient group who he has found often to have multiple infectious sources as part of their clinical picture. He is dedicated to making the treatment process as easy as it can be, and has found that for his patient population lowering viral loads can often help people feel better sooner. It gives them a better platform for anti-Chlamydial therapy.

Don't hesitate to call to speak to Michael again and have him explain the rationale for going about it this way in your particular case. We often don't take in the whole thing during a visit, or only think of questions we need to ask afterwards.

My MD wanted to include me in a trial of Valcyte but when he learned I was living alone and didn't have real support, we both decided that Valcyte would be too tough for me on my own.

Valtrex is supposed to be easier to tolerate isn't it?  I'm wondering if I should mention Valtrex to my MD and see if that would be a good thing to to begin.  I'm on Doxyi [12] now (200mg/day).  Hmm, just wondering.  What's the scoop on tolerating Valtrex?

I have taken both Valtrex & Famvir antivirals for herpes I.

Presently I only take about 2 gms of L Lysine a day & keep the probiotics up to snuff.  If the balance gets off kilter then I add the Famvir back.

I know when I went to the FFC for testing & results 2 yrs ago, they told me I was in no condition to start taking abxi [1] for the Lymes so I had to pump more vitaminsi [6] down for 6 months & then I treated it.   At the time I didn't ask why --- well, I guess I was in worse shape than I thought I was.

I can't speak for everyone here, but I am pretty desperate to get my life back, not like I was 25.  I can look back now with experience & see that I was waaayyy out of control, running on adrenaline, doing too much.

Listen to what your very good experienced doc tells you & follow it carefully.  You will be back in the saddle soon enough!

I was treated with Valtrex last year due to high levels of EBVi [14] and slightly elevated HHV-6.  I took it for about two months.  My EBV levels were so high that I really believed it was at the root of my problems, and I was very hopeful the Valtrex would be my answer.

I do believe I had some die-off type reactions at the beginning, but otherwise there were no side effects or anything bothersome.  The bad news is that I felt exactly the same during and after the treatment as I had before.  There was no improvement for me.  Also, my doctor did not do any follow-up testing to determine whether my levels for the EBV or HHV-6 had decreased after the treatment, so I really don't know whether it benefited me or not.  

I don't suppose I've been very helpful, but I guess I just wanted to tell you that other than the early die-off, there were no problems with taking Valtrex for me.

Finch, glad that you posted your experience...I'm contemplating asking for a script of it to see if it helps my fatigue. I know it is controversial as to whether or not EBVi [14] can cause fatigue and other problems.  It would have been interesting to see if your titers came down. but I dont know enough about the tx to know if 2 months would have effected your numbers.

Kelly I also see Dr.Powell,have for about 4 to 5 years now. I have had Lyme, C.P, EBVi [14], CMV, Babesia, Bartonella and lord knows what else. I had a wonderful doctor start me on antibioticsi [1] for Lyme but when he retired I had to find help some where else. I found Doc Powell and feel extremly fortunate to have found him. He is brilliant! And looks outside the box... My titers for EBV and CMV were off the charts. I was ALWAYS breaking out with shingles. ugh! Other doctors told me to live with it. What a nightmare these virus's can be. I have learned to read up on everything that I had/have and learned that virus's can just about have the same symptoms as these bacteria's and protozoa's, ect...It is like we have to unravel Pandora's box in our bodies. And it can be a very long road. phew! I have swelling between my scalp and skull. It has been going on now since 1999. And it has caused mental problems, and I know my brain doesn't function as well as it use too. The blood vessels, brain, nerves have been invaded. Been quite the experience let me tell you. I had gotten to the point couple years ago where I had doctors telling me I had alsheimers, dementiai [20], ummm problems because I partyed when I was a teenager...lol...anyway going to Dr. Powell I had someone that didn't turn his back on me. And said yes all of these little critters can do what is going on with me. I have been on Valtrex or Valcyte now for about a year. And I can use my arms and legs much better now. And the right side of my head is starting to function some what better. I had gotten to the point were I was flat line..NO EMOTIONS couldn't feel hot and cold..really crazy stuff... Moral of my story is you are in excellent hands with Doctor Powell. He learns new things all the time and each of us have different needs. I have been on many protocolsi [21]. Different combinations of med's. I am not cured and I truly don't know if I will ever be totally cured. But I am better:) I know I have someone that is trying to treat the problems and not just cover the symptoms. He is not like alot of doctors I have had that are closed minded. He will answers your questions so don't be afraid to ask why? :) I also want to point out that it takes "alot" of foot work on our part also to learn and keep up with these different protocols. It does take time. No magic pill out there...shoot! I wish you good health and a quick recovery. P.S. Someone asked about Valtrex and Valcyte. From what I have learned the Valtrex is used for the EBV virus . Valcyte is for Cytomeglovirus...believe I have the right... Warm thoughts to you all!

Thanks everyone for the comments, I do feel very lucky to have found Dr. powell. His PA wants me to get my body temperature up before starting the Valtrex. I responded that I thought my body temp was perfectly normal, and sure enough he took my temp right then and it was 97 degrees, wow! they really know their stuff, it is so refreshing. I will update on what the valtrex does for me to see if maybe it could benefit anyone else...

Hi Kelly, I am also working with Dr. Powell on getting well. I was about a year into the antibiotic treatment for Cpni [4] when I came down with EBVi [14]. I was really ill from this bug. I had been getting to the point on the CAPi [9] where I felt almost 100% normal and then my bad luck---I ran into this nasty bug. It caused my wrist and knee joints to swell and become very painful along with the fatigue and malaise. I took Valtrex 2 gms a day for 5 months. This seemed to help. Took about 6 months to feel better and for the joint swelling to disappear. AS soon as I could I started exercising again as I though it would boost my immunei [22] system. I think it has helped. I was quite distressed last month though when I was told my test for HHV6 was elevated. This was a new test I have never had so I don't know if it is a recent infection or an old one reactivated. I agree with Jodie that these viruses can really be jsut as bad as Cpn. But hopefully as we knock down some of them our own immune system will come back online somewhat stronger. I am not taking VAltrex now (I read that it is not effective alone against HHV6. But I am taking Transfer Factor, Camu Camu and low dose Naltraxone. You are in good hands with Dr. P. Raven CAP since 8-05 for Cpn and Mycoplasma P. for MS and/or CFSi [10]

Hi Kelly,  My husband's doctor started him on Valtrex from the beginning, even before testing.  He took it for 7 months; then he was switched to acyclovir to work on other viruses.  He's been taking acyclovir for 10 months.  I'm glad he was taking Valtrex in his early months on the CAPi [9], because I believe it prevented viral flares, a common problem for new CAPers.   Actually, I hope to see him take Valtrex again or some other highly effective anti-EBVi [14] antiviral, as he was recently retested for EBV---still too high.  During his months on Valtrex and for several months afterward, he had no fever blisters/cold sores, a problem that was frequent before the Valtrex.  He has had three cold sores now in the past 3 months.  HHV-1 in and of itself causes more problems than just innocuous little fever blisters, especially for the immuno-compromised, and I read its flares as though it were a barometer for other viral activity.
