Sorry, the locals refer to the area is Orange County more often than referring to specific cities. OC is east of Los Angeles. Probably the best known city in OC is Anaheim, the home of Disneyland.

Everything and everyone that I've been in contact with that's made the trip to see Dr Powell in Sacramento feels he's worth it.  In fact, that's where I would go if/when I need more than I can manage thru this site and with my GP alone here in AZ although it would be a trek to get there from here.

Reenie, Your comment is SO timely!! I have just spent the last hr. or so reading about Dr. Powell and visiting his website. The timing of your response is like confirmation that I should pursue him. I read that he does do phone consults (he may require one in person visit first??) so distance is no longer an issue. Thanks again, Reenie, and I'll let everyone know about my experience w/ Dr. Powell.

When I called his office and spoke with his staff, they explained how you must do one in person visit.  The follow ups can be in person or on the phone, either way.

My OC friend is of very limited funds right now. He is hesitant even to see a doctor because docs who treat this are usually outside the insurance plans. I know he cannot afford to fly to Sacramento at this time.

Sunnivara, Dr. P. takes most all insurance. The only thing he doesn't take is Medicare. Your friend should have a yard sale and raise the money. Maybe a co-op yard sale with other friends.Don't forget the baked goods.

With the price of gas, perhaps a train ticket is cheaper? Amtrax is $51.00 one way from LA Union Station to Sacramento.

And Southwest Airlines is having a special promotion this summer:

$57 one-way, to/from Los Angeles, CA to Sacramento.

Hey, you can barely fill up your gas tank for that!!!

I think these are great ideas and reflect your "glass half full" attitude, which is so important for those of us with chronic illnesses.

I wanted to add that when I was checking on flying up there from Phoenix, which I still might at some point, I calculated that I would be able to do this all in one day if I made an afternoon appt and would only have the cost of the airplane ticket and a taxi to and from the airport as extra expense vs an overnight stay and a rental car.  

From what I've been thru so far with my illness I would do this in a heartbeat if/when the time comes that I would need the extra help. It sure beats all of the countless hrs of misery and disappointment one can spend trying to find a local Dr, in my opinion.

No kidding! Last time I filled my gas tank it cost me $51 and I have a small car, an Elantra. I can't imagine how people can afford to drive those big SUVs any more.

Reenie, that's just what I did. I made an appointment for late morning or early afternoon and did it all in one day. Did have to pay for a rental car from the airport and back but it was rather cheap. I left early in the morning and got home around 8:00pm From the airport to his office is about a 30 minute drive and the traffic wasn't bad that time of day. Raven

$51 for a tank full of gas is cheap.   We are currently paying something like $80 for a small car fill up in the UK.

Have him look up angel flights.  They are a group of volunteers that use their money and gas to fly people in need of medical care.

That's how I got to see doc Powell and it was a scary but fun experience
