Over the last year, I have developed an intermittent pain in my left arm, in the muscle above the inner elbow. The attacks are sudden and very painful. The muscle seems to go rigid and the pain feels deep, closer to the bone. It is very focussed but the lasting ache and exhaustion of it affects the arm to the armpit and my entire arm is weak with fatigue when the episode ends. I can't figure out what triggers this, and nothing I do makes it stop. It lasts anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour or so and can happen once a day or off and on for hours over the course of the day. It seems to happen in the later part of the day. The episodes are building in frequency.
Any advice or recommendation would be very welcomed. This really hurts.
Thanks.

It could be lots of things.
It could be lots of things. The nearest I ever got to a similar issue was years ago when my Thyroid was playing up. I used to get sudden agonising pains in my knee. It would hang around for a while getting worse and worse then just suddenly stop.
I notice you're taking Iodine. Is that for a thyroid problem?

I began taking magnascent iodine last week. Tastes like drinking chlorine. :P I've got Iodoral on order as well to try.
I think I was hoping this was a typical experience and one of the quick and amazing fixes like what Vitamin C does would be just what I needed...
Tim gave my arm, shoulder blades to fingertips, a gentle and thorough massage last night and found the bicep and the under side had a lot of small hard lumps. I'll get my doctor to check it out and tell me it's nothing when I have my exam in August.

Hello Twickle Purple aka
Hello Twickle Purple aka Corinna.
I read your post last night but was way too tired to reply. So came back today to ask you if you have read a book called "The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook" Clair Davies with Amber Davies, both are NCTMB
I get knots in my muscle fibers that cause pain much like what you describe. The methods in this workbook have helped me many times to overcome soft tissue pain. Here is basically what the above book says but written in my own lingo for this type pain in the arm. <wink>
The brachialis muscle is the workhorse of the elbow. Lifting by bending the elbow requires contraction of the brachialis. It does much of the work normally credited to the biceps. Although it's an upper arm muscle the trouble it causes is felt in the hand. (I frequently have this symptom myself)
The brachialis lies under the biceps, covering the front of the lower half of the humerus. Trigger points in a brachialis muscle make it difficult to straighten the elbow, but primarily cause pain at the base of the thumb. You may also feel some degree of pain in the front of the shoulder and just below the crease in the elbow. Also you may have ache & tightness on the outside of the upper arm near the elbow. Compression of the radial nerve that passes through the brachialis can make the thumb and the back of the forearm tingle or feel numb as well.
Working all day at the keyboard can aggravate it terribly with your arms held out in front. Find the most sore spot in your muscle... often a sort of lump in the muscle... the brachialis trigger points are found under the outer edge fo the biceps just above the crease of the elbow. Even if it hurts use your thumb to push into the lump and massage it. The pain should disperse and fade away afterward if properly done. If it comes back later try again. Done on a regular basis I can keep the worst of my pain under control.
Hope this helps you. =) Blessings MM

Miying Meng, thank you.
Miying Meng, thank you. This is a good explanation and the area involved matches. I do get the tingles in my hands and my shoulder and arm ache as describe. The idea of pressing on the ache is a bit nauseating though, the entire muscle seizes and goes hard when I'm having spasm, but we will work on the pressure point. I'm going to google more about this.
Many thanks! :o)

Michèle, I did not think
Michèle, I did not think of it for this. Yesterday though the pain was so 'loud' and non-abating that I felt justified in having sweet treat!! It always makes me feel better...and my arm was better even if just for a couple of hours. When I next have the muscle seize I will take a tablet right away, and hope for the best. It would be so so wonderful if that works for this, like the C works for so much I experience.
Thank you for the helpful tip!
PS. I learn so much from all you wonderful people, thank you very much for being here.

2 dextrosol tabs worked!
2 dextrosol tabs worked! When the pain came back after a while I just had 2 more... and it's been a couple if hours now. I'm a happy camper.
Not sure if I should let them dissolve or chew them up. So for each 2 I took, I chewed one and let the other dissolve. Does it matter?

Hi Corinna,This is a big
Hi Corinna,
This is a big indication then that you are dealing with a goodly amount of secondary porphyriai. I get charlie-horse like cramps in my legs and feet and aches and pains in my arms associated with increased secondary porphyria, so your symptoms are not all that unusual.
Be sure to get this very much under control before you press ahead with the antibioticsi. Otherwise it will build and other, even more difficult symptoms (depression, heavy fatigue, etc) may also become a big problem.
Take care. Keep us posted!

Hi Dan,I was wondering
Hi Dan,
I was wondering when, and how, porphyric symptoms would manifest and I seem to be checking off the boxes now. Knowing what measures to take with what symptom is wonderfully helpful. And wonderful is really an understatement when the relief comes. A charlie-horse is about right... ow ow ow!
I started the Doxyi last week so now I'm guessing this is why the arm pain is becoming more frequent. I have chewed up a package of tabs this afternoon/evening and wonder how much I should take.
I did some hop-scotching in my reading so now I'm going to go back to the beginning and fill in the gaps.
I wanted to tell you that my sauna room is ready to go again (quiet cheers at our place when we were done -- Tim really missed it.) We're experiencing unusually warm weather presently and I am doing quite well with it (which is unusual and quite welcomed). So tomorrow, my last day off of a terrific four solid days of no work, I am going to celebrate by starting Round 2 with my Sauna. I received Dr. Wilson's Sauna Therapy book in the mail today (along with Brownstein's Iodine book), so I think I'm going to bookmark the Pot Belly Syndrome for now and dig into it right away. I am quite excited: Christmas in July.
Thank you so much for your encouragement and support!

Hi Corinna,Glad the glucose
Hi Corinna,
Glad the glucose is helping!
You know, Dr Stratton suggests that many of our rosaceai symptoms might really be very much releated to secondary porphyriai, so we might be suffering heavily from secondary porphyria to begin with. I don't know if it's true for all rosaceans, but I believe he is/was right in my case. I suspect he is right for most rosaceans (so does he!).
Go heavy on the starchy carbs (they last longer than glucose). Avoid red meats and members of the cabbage family. Drink plenty of water. Use glucose as needed.
Glad to hear the sauna is back up and running. I really find that just the right amount (enough to make me sweat for 15-20 minutes or so, but not enough to raise my pulse dramatically) seems to really help with the secondary porphyria. I sure hope it will help you too!
Hang in there. You're on your way to better health...
