A number of folks on the CAPi being treated for CFSi/ME and FMSi have been put on iodine supplementation as an adjunct. It is certainly not part of the recommended supplementsi, but some of the CFS doctors using the CAP for Cpni have found it helpful, especially where low energy, thyroid problems and brain fog are concerned.
Like any supplement, there are always concerns about usage and arguments can go two ways. You should look into it yourself before jumping in, of course, just like anything you hear on the web or elsewhere. I'd strongly recommend that anyone considering adding it in because of people posting their experiences they read about here, buy and read the following book: Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It (3rd Edition) - Book or DVD by Dr. David Brownstein
It is important to be informed because, for example, increasing iodine will also increase urinary excretion of bromine-- a toxic mineral used in a lot of modern foods and what not, which binds with iodine receptors-- and there are protocolsi for handling this and it's symptoms. Iodine supplementation may also make for better thyroid function which might require adjustment to thyroid medications.
It is helpful to understand the full rationale before initiating this or any other supplementation and, of course, consulting your doctor before adding anything to your protocol.
A useful introduction is this article: http://optimox.com/pics/Iodine/IOD-09/IOD_09.htm
A site which promotes the use of iodine to treat breast cancer, that also has a lot of useful information on iodine in general, is: http://breastcancerchoices.org/iodineindex.html
As I said, this is not, repeat not part of the recommended supplementsi, only one being used by some CAP patients at the recommendation of their physicians.
The recommended form of supplementation is Iodoral, which is formulated specially to avoid gastric upset.
Another form is Magnascent Iodine, about which Dr. Brownstein has not rendered an opinion as of yet. I use it because Iodoral made for urinary irritation and I appear to be able to better tolerate this form. I'm awaiting Dr. Powell's feedback on it after he researches this form more thoroughly, and I will post it here when I get it.

I was sent some info on
I was sent some info on Iodoral a couple of weeks ago from a woman that heads a guai support group and Fibromyalgia Recovery web site. She is now suggesting that before folks start a protocol like guai or some other protocolsi they try using Iodoral and see if that causes improvement.
I think that's a good idea. Some folks may get enough improvement on Iodoral alone that they are satisfied. In fact, that's why I'd like to try it for myself.
I have the bottle sitting here and I have to say I'm afraid to take it!
I discussed it with my endo yesterday and he said he'd have to check my thyroid function monthly because "therapeutic iodine doses will blow out your thyroid" meaning according to him I'd have to up my dose.
He didn't say it was a bad idea to take it and so I was a little puzzled. From all I've read online, taking iodine can increase thyroid function not decrease it, right? I have some thyroid function but I've had to supplement now for over 20 yrs.
I am scared about any negative effects. Has anyone experienced anything really radical? and if so at what dose? TIA

As Arttile said,
Love this phrase Jim, "consulting your doctor before adding anything to your protocol" -- as if!
A month ago, at a semi-annual check-up, I asked my doctor what he knew about iodine. He honestly replied 'nothing'. I also asked him if he thought that he had ever successfully treated Chlamydia. Again he honestly replied 'no'. Interesting.
There is also this page, http://www.alternativehealth.co.nz/diseases/candida.htm , suggesting that iodine might be very useful in treating candida. There is another page reporting that candida was treated in African AIDS patients with iodine as a mouthwash. Perhaps it would be useful in an antibiotic protocol but as you said Jim, it is important to understand the consequences before jumping.
My experience with Iodoral and Lugol's solution has been positive with managable side effects.

On Iodoral dosing, why are some folks titrating the doses above the one 12.5 mg tablet a day? I am hoping I can stand to take ONE tab which I'm planning to start next week, but I notice lots of folks taking a whole lot more like 50 mg/day.
I've read where 50 - 100 mg is used for breast cancer issues but is there any reason to go beyond the one a day tab? TIA

Can idodine help energy even
Can idodine help energy even if thyroid tests are within range do you think?
I have energy issues and extreme dry mouth (especially at night, wakes me up) but good thyroid levels.
How does it help dry mouth and breast cancer risk?
My GYN just recommended topical idodine for excruciating pre-menses breast pain. Christiane Northrup writes that iodine "decreases the ability of estrogen to adhere to estrogen receptors in the breast". Any link there to the breast cancer piece by chance?
I tried the topical iodine and it burned my skin like a sunburn, peeling skin and all. Not sure yet what could have caused that.
Cheers,

Reenie, et al- I'd really
Reenie, et al- I'd really encourage you to get Dr. Brownstein's book. It covers the use well, including the issue Raven referred to of clearing the bromine from the receptors and tissues, and the use of salt to clear the bromine when needed. I don't think at the dose you describe you can "blow your thyroid out." If you are sensitive to stuff, start with something like the magnascent iodine (lugol's solution) and titrate.
I should mention that Dr. Brownstein responded to Dr. Powell's asking about the magnascent iodine by saying that it is not enough of a dosage to displace bromine, i.e. that you have to have more iodine in circulation than that for immediate use to displace the bromine so it is excreted, hence the Iodoral.

Jim,
I'm just tying to clarify things and get your personal, subjective, "non expert" opinion re Iodoral vs. Magnescent Drops.
I am assuming that even though you said in your original post of 12/07 that the Iodoral irritated your urinary tract, you decided to go back on it after all (your signature indicates that this is what you are taking). It would have been helpful to know why as I am trying to see what people's experiences with both these Iodine supplementsi has been.
Your experience is not meant to be a substitute for reading a book, but Jim, you are usually very willing to share your experiences here. And I will be very happy to read the book.

I second Jim's advice to get informed before using iodine. I just discovered that some folks are allergic to it after researching why topical iodine burned my skin. Hopefully that won't preclude oral use of it, but may require an allergist's testing to find out. Hope that doesn't apply to anyone else here!

My doctor recommended that I use a substitute for Armour Thyroid which I'd been using for years. He wanted me to take dulce (which is sea weed) -- yuck. Hence my interest in either taking the Iodoral or the Magnescent Drops. He doesn't have any real knowledge of Iodoral or Magnescent Drops.

Denise- I apologize for any snippeyness in my tone! I did not want to imply at all that your questions were off base. They were not. I just didn't have the energy to explain more after a long day of work. I have less time these days and more things to respond to.
I have to confess that my signature doesn't always reflect my current process because I'm doing a lot of experimenting with things but don't want to confuse new folks who often look to what I'm doing as the model. I had added in the iodoral for a bit, but am back to using the Magnascent because I'm trying some other directions and don't want to confuse the data in my responses.
I never got up to enough Iodorol to get to the bromine detox, so I don't have much to add from my own experience. Raven is a better source. I can say the Dr. Powell very much is behind this principle, and uses Brownstein's protocol to do so, and will work patients up to 100mg a day for a while depending on their reactions. He has found this has made a major difference for many people in energy and thyroid function. I have found use of the Magnascent to improve my energy and thinking during the day, but I suspect that at these quantities I'm not doing much to clear any bromine bound to receptor sites and create a more permanent change. I hope that gives a clearer read, and please don't take my fatigue as a personal comment on your curiosity! Mea culpa.
