Insomnia
Submitted by Arttile on Sun, 2007-07-29 23:07. Is there an association between cpni and melatonini-resistant insomnia? I ask because I have been plagued by allergies, sinusitis and insomnia since a very serious illness at age 9 (I now have ppmsi). It always seemed a strange coincidence to me that the three problems all occurred following the illness. My father, who now is falling, has throughout my lifetime always suffered from sinusitis and insomnia. About 10 years ago he started developing a dowager's hump; then he developed polymyalgia; then his insomnia became so acute that nothing allowed him to get a good night's sleep. And now he falls. He's too old for cpn treatment -- at 85 the side effects might kill him -- but I wonder about the connection.

The following thought is
The following thought is probably very simplistic, as no doubt there are many reasons for insomnia, but it is fairly common for older people to suffer from insomnia, we are told this is because older people need less sleep. I never found this explanation very satisfactory, I'm enclined to think that Cpni could be the root cause of this especially as 70% of the over 50 population will have been exposed to Cpn at some time in their life.
Regarding possible reasons for the apparent increase in Cpn: I'm not sure how much more Cpn infection there is than say a generation ago, but if Chuck remark is correct, there could be other reasons for more prevalence of Cpn infection: more people living in close proximity than in the past, better detection and diagnosis, people live longer than they did etc.

In addition to porphyrins
In addition to porphyrins blocking GABA receptors (causing more nervous system arousal and less inhibition) and melatonini being used up for antioxidanti purposes, there could be Cpni infection of the hypothalamus or other autonomic centers. Or, it could be that the constantly circulating cytokinesi create some kind of inflammationi/arousal process. Higher circulating cytokines and sleep disturbance are characteristic of CFSi and FMSi, and certainly commonly reported here (inflammation and sleep disturbance). I would say that mine has improved over the years of treatment, I'm not lying in bed awake and "vibrating" even with sleep meds in me, but I still require sleep meds to get decent sleep.

I take a big cocktail for sleep & have similar illnesses as Jim K has.
Melatonini I read recently, if taken in large doses, which I did take more than recommended (10 mg) depletes estrogen. This would explain some of the hot flashings which is very slowly subsiding as the natural HRT is catching up. I now take 1 mg at most at nite in addition to drugs listed in my signature.

Hi Jim, well, I give up. I searched the internest & I can't find what I read last year in JUly about excesses of melatonini effecting estrogen. At that time I was taking lots, 3 mg?

3mg is a lot. David Wheldoni recommends 1.5mg but reading my bottle it does say you can take 3 x 1.5mg sprays maximum. I only take 1 and only if I had a bad night the previous night.

Getting crammed in on Tube trains during the daily commute with people sneezing and coughing in your face. Air con systems in office buildings that just circulate the air from one floor to another.
I always found that whenever I started a new job, I could more or less guarantee that a week later I'd be ill.

Sleep disturbance is sure
Sleep disturbance is sure characteristic for my CFSi. I Get to lsleep fine but wake mid cycle after about 3 hours. Have tried herbal combos, GABA, melatonini and Klonopin (clonazipan) 0.5 mg allow me a full 6 to 7 hours straight, I awake unfogged and clear. The blessing is that after much discussion I was able to convince my provider to write me a full year script, for one tablet at bedtime. ( also got years script for Doxyi, Azythro, and Tinidazole).

Jim, lying awake all night
Jim, lying awake all night and vibrating is exactly what plagued me when I had my first attack of illness in '02. Nothing I tried would stop it. Now I no longer have any insomnia---sleep like a rock. But at times when I feel die off, I get those scalp-tightening feelings and the nerves in my neck begin firing randomly. Now that I have knocked down the load quite a bit, the hyper-active nervous system is mostly quiet.
Magnesium seems to help with the hair trigger nerves--oral and in the tub with Epson salts . Sauna also helps.
And why is Cpni seemly a bigger problem now? I read that organisms mutate when exposed to Zero G. Perhaps our astronauts have been incubating a new form of Cpn over the years? Or the exposure to environmental poisons has weakened our immunei systems. Or both.
