Important new finding: Chlamydia pneumoniae in MS patients

An important new finding of Cpni in a "subset" of MSi patients just out. Note the phrase "predominantly detected" in the title. This is big news.

You can find it in our Research pages at http://www.cpnhelp.org/chlamydia_pneumoniaespeci

"Chlamydia pneumoniae-specific intrathecali oligoclonal antibody response is predominantly detected in a subset of multiple sclerosis patients with progressive forms."

Wow! This was not a

Wow! This was not a double-blind study, was it?

The concept of

The concept of double-blindness doesn't apply to this sort of study, as they weren't trying to give the patients any treatment.

Yeah, I can see where this

Yeah, I can see where this isn't that sort of study but what I would like to know is what their sample size of MSi patients is, as well as what constitutes "predominantely".  A percentage?  How high?  What's the error rate?  Just things that the nay sayers will want to know and it makes sense that we should know it too.

I went and read the abstract

I went and read the abstract and they do provide persentages for everything, which is good.  It's more then just a "conclusion".  It's backed up by facts.

What I wonder is whether the method used was the best one for this kind of study?  We all know about how different tests yield different levels of accuracy, so I wonder about this one.  Given that Dr. S in his study at Vanderbilt found Cpni in something like 88% of patients with M.S., I would have expected a much higher percentage in this study.

HI John, Dr. S. did some

HI John,

Dr. S. did some additional amplification in his work which would make his PCRi testing more sensitive. There is always the risk of getting false positives when you do this as you start approaching the noise floor but I think both his and this study present legitimate and interesting results.
