Hypoglycemia and how do you manage?

I am on Doxycycline 100 mg x2/day since 01/14/08. Before Doxy I started with Minocycline/Rifampin CAPi but had to stop in a few days due to severe reactions and overwhelming hypoglycemia as well. Now, on Doxy, hypoglycemia continues. I was feeling good for a couple of days earlier this week but on Wed evening relapsed with weakness, tiredness, shaking/shivering due to feeling cold, tachycardia, BP's up, nausea, hunger and so on. Most of the Thu I felt waves of the same effects and had to leave work. Today, Fri, I am feeling much better but I have to eat something every 2 hrs to keep re-occurrence of hypoglycemia away.

I scheduled an appt with my endocrinologist on Jan.30 to evaluate if there is something else going on with me but I believe that it's just a side effect of the treatment.

If I have to eat every 2-3 hrs, I may gain weight and I already have 20-30 unwanted lbs on me. Small snacks like a veggie doesn't help much and fruits actually aggravate condition.

I was wondering if someone can help me with suggestions and/or share experiences how to battle hypoglycemia?

Thanks a lot,

Nata.

Would it help for you to get glucose tablets at the grocery and have them on hand when this happens?  I do this when I have dizziness and it helps a lot.  I am not diabetic so I don't want this to come across as medical advice.  I just found it helps me.

I get all those symptoms from the abxi too but I've found a good supply of slow-burning carbohydrates keeps them at bay and keeps the hunger away too. One of my favorite and most satifying meals is a chicken tostada salad made up of lots of green leaf and romaine lettuce, low fat chicken, cheese, salsa, low fat sour cream, and black beans (no tortilla). Black beans are high in carbs but take several hours to digest so they keep your hunger satisfied and your blood sugar levels even. Avoid sugar and white flour, white rice and potatoes. Eat only whole grains and mix them with proteins and fats. Nuts are good too for satisfying hunger and adding some slow-burning carbs. Try natural peanut butter on whole grain sprouted bread. Avoid fruit juice. Only eat whole fruit and mix it with fats, protein, or high-fiber foods to keep the fruit sugar from hitting your system too quickly. You shouldn't need to eat every 2 hours if you eat the right kind of carbohydrates. A good glycemic control diet is the South Beach diet so do a search for that to see what kinds of foods work well. (Ignore Phase 1 because you need your carbs)

Good advice! I try ALWAYS to have something with me because I always was this way but it is now ferocious when it hits out of nowhere. Peanut butter and jelly on whole grain bread in a little bag is very useful. And a granola bar can save you!

Nata- "weakness, tiredness,

Nata- "weakness, tiredness, shaking/shivering due to feeling cold, tachycardia, BP's up, nausea, hunger" sounds like a mix of low glucose, endotoxini reaction, porphyriai. You might need to do different things for them:

Tachycardia, tiredness, nausea, even gnawing hunger feeling (I'd get this in the past) sound like porphyria and immediate glucose in sufficient amounts (talking 3-4 tablets here) is the fastest help. Note that if you are truly hypoglycemic (overinsulin producing) this is contraindicated, but if you had normal glucose-tolerance test but hypoglycemic-like reactions, it's more likely porphyria.

Shaking/shivering, feeling cold, sound more like endotoxin: vitamin c is a stalwart.

If the protein and complex carbs approach used for hypoglycemia doesn't do it for you, it may be the porphyria and needs glucose (fast acting energy) rather than the slow acting kind.

I had more problems with the hypoglycemia pre-capi than I do now.

However, I have put weight on.  As annoying as that is; I have decided it is more important to rid my body of infectionsi than having to lose a few pounds.  One thing at a time.

Your symptoms sound porphria in nature too.  I take the glucose tabs, keep the good carbs up, chitosan.  I always have an organic snack with me & never leave the house without glucose & emergen C, just in case.

Last night I had a spell of the chills, temp dropped & had to power up on the toxin remedies before going off to bed.

  I began getting

I began getting hypoglycaemia when I was about eighteen, so presumably along with the prime CPni infection.  CPn likes to eat all it can.  I had to take glucose tablets or dried fruit everywhere with me, yet I never put on much weight.

I remember that in just before my last ultra-big relapse, a couple of years before I started CAPi, I spent a week just eating and always being hungry.

When I started CAP, I noticed that I tended to get hungry when just taking the bacteristatics, but completely lost my appetite on flagyli.  The hypoglycaemia went, though  and when I was hungry I would eat and be satisfied, so the problem which I had for years stopped and hasn't come back.

I suppose that's not a great help, just my experience.......Sarah

I get a very pronounced

I get a very pronounced hypoglycemia-like effect about 20 minutes after taking doxycycline if I have not eaten carbohydrates beforehand.   This started at the same time I started the CAPi.  I know that people on the site have different reactions and different dietary requirements that may limit the types of carbohydrates they use, but speaking merely of my own experiences, the type of carbohydrate seem to doesn't matter as they all have worked equally well at preventing the hypoglycemia-like effect.

Jim, I think your analysis

Jim, I think your analysis is right on the money. That also scares me  - what a big load of bacteria I must have if I react so severely even to single Doxyi, not CAPi. I got very-very sick by the end of last week and had to stop Doxy. Despite quitting abxi, I continue having these attacks of dysglycemia at least once a day though they seemed to be less intense now.

I am seeing my endocrinologist this afternoon and hope he will be able to evaluate if it's a side effect of the abxi or some condition that I have developed. I am also going to get a home blood sugar monitor.

Once I get back to balance, I have to think how do I get back on CAP. It's very frustrating that I had to quit.

Thank you everyone for sharing experiences, I am utilizing every bit of info.
