Hypnosis

In the Oct. 10 issue of Science News there is an article about hypnosis. They have found that the brain actually changes while under so that if you are told that your arm is paralyzed, the part of the brain that allows you to move your arm doesn't light up. I suppose, similarly, when you are given the test suggestion (to see if you are under) to raise your right arm, the part of the brain that stimulates arm movement will light up and when you are told to jump up and down, the same thing is happening. I take Prozac to stimulate parts of my brain that help with walking, etc. and they are coming out with a new drug (fampridine) to do the same.

So the question is, could hypnosis, which can be used to lasting effect when not under (e.g. smoking cessation), be used as a stimulus instead of drugs?

An interesting thought.

An interesting thought.  However, some people are much more susceptible hypnosis than others.  David is one such and he once sat at high table under hypnosis for the entire evening meal at his hall of residence at university and no, they didn't save him anything.  I am different though: I so much feel I need to be in total control of myself, I resist strongly, so it wouldn't help me a jot..............Sarah

Well, Sarah, I do go under

Well, Sarah, I do go under easily and, as you know, I am experiencing side effects from the medication that I take to stimulate the damaged neurons in my brain, i.e. Prozac. Now, I can't complain much about the lack-of-depression side effect but the osteoporosis is a nasty one. I've been hoping that Fampridine would do the same, but who knows what side effects it has.

Sid used to hypnotize me for fun when we first got together and I inadvertently stumbled upon an induction technique in the 70s and was  using  it on students at the Brooklyn Museum. I didn't think anything was strange until one kid asked, upon leaving, when he would stop seeing the world through colored glass. Anyway, I've been on both ends numerous time (lately I merely numb my college students rather than hypnotize them).

And I'm always willing to go under. What fun if it also helped me walk!

Do you see my reasoning?

Oh, I do see your reasoning:

Oh, I do see your reasoning: it would be an excellent thing, but unfortunately not something that could help me because I am so resistant.  David, who knows how to do it, gave up trying to hypnotise me because I jus kept laughing.

Good job I don't smoke.............Sarah

Hi Nancy and Sarah,  I

Hi Nancy and Sarah,  I considered studying with this teacher about 15 years ago.   Just googled his name and found this link.   I learned about his school from the therapist that taught me self-hypnosis in the mid-late 1980's.  At that time the location of the training was California and I never followed through I headed in other directions.   I still have a set of his audio casette tapes somewhere in storage.   What I learned has been extremely useful for many procedures and situations.

Nancy I am interested in following your experience with this application.  Louise
