Glucocorticoids Increase In Vitro and In Vivo Activities of Antibioticsi against Chlamydophila pneumoniae
Dario Caronzolo, Valeria Lucini, Marilou Pannacci, Silvia Grosso, Federica Colleoni, Franco Fraschini, and Francesco Scaglione* Department of Pharmacology, Chemotherapy, and Toxicology, University of Milan, Milan, Italy
The in vitro and in vivo antichlamydial activities of dexamethasone and beclomethasone alone and in combination with an antibiotic were tested. In vitro, dexamethasone and beclomethasone decreased the number of inclusion-forming units versus the control number (P < 0.001). the combination of glucocorticoids with azithromycin, telithromycin, or levofloxacin was more active than antibiotics used alone (p < 0.001). the combination, tested in a murine chlamydophila pneumoniae infection model, produced similar results.
They go on to conclude (excerpt):
The previous in vivo studies showing that cortisone reactivates C. pneumoniae in vivo via an immunosuppressant effect (13) are not in disagreement with our data. We used an in vivo dose of Dex and Beclo (120 __g/kg/day) significantly lower than the cortisone acetate dose tested in the past (125 mg/kg/day). Our dose of Dex might mainly lead to an anti- inflammatory effect, while the dose of cortisone leads to an immunosuppressant effect. Moreover, cortisone acetate was used in infected mice carrying a latent infection while we treated a primary infection. Our data are indirectly in agreement with a recent study in which, in subjects with severe asthma, anti-inflammatory doses of steroids were found to be associated with lower titers of immunoglobulin G and A antichlamydial antibodies... ...In a primary infection, an anti-inflammatory and/or a light immunosuppressant effect might be required to counteract the evolution of C. pneumoniae in latent or persistent forms, keep- ing C. pneumoniae inclusions in an antibiotic-susceptible form.

Jim, interesting post! i
Jim,
interesting post! i have tried MANY CFS meds/supplementsi. To DATE, low dose (<25mg) hydrocortisone (cortef) has helped me more then anything.. my old physician (Holtorf) just completed a study http://www.hormoneandlongevitycenter.com/nss-folder/pictures/JOURNAL_CFSF.pdf and "Safe Uses of Hydrocortisone" by William Jefferies MD is a good read for any chronic fatigue/Fibro patient. we must realize HIGH dosages of prednisone, prednisolone, etc (what is commonly prescribed in health care) CAN be very dangerous (immunei suppresive), but low dose hydrocortisone can actually have a paradoxal effect (boost immune system). keep in mind that 5mg of predisone is equivalent to 1.25mg of hydrocortison (cortef).
i was initially resistant when i was asked to try the script. For years, i have thought this catabolic hormone was evil! You cant pick up a health magazine or watch some informertial and NOT hear how lowering your cortisol can turn you into some supermodel. well, first lets keep in mind that MIGHT be true for some of the general public (NOT CFS/fibro) patients. second, high doses of cortisol can be detrimental to the body, but LOW DOSE (<25mg) hydrocortisone is NOT equivalent to excessive cortisol. there is much debate whether low dose can suppress our own negative feedback system and because there have been some days (not many) that i have not taken any cortef with NO adrenal crash i am convinced it does NOT suppress ones own system.
well, i am just ECSTATIC to hear its anti-Cpn effects...

Keith,
I don't want to be pedantic but are you sure of the figures you are quoting?

Thanks for the link Garcia- I tried five times to post the whole thing including link, abstract and conclusions but the damned thing wouldn't take! Don't know why. Didn't like the formating or something. I'll try again.

Thanks for posting
Thanks for posting this info and link! I started Cortef about 2 months ago and was concerned because the info that came with it stated it can "lower your ability to fight infection" I, too, was hesitant to take it (I was using Isocort)
I am on Armour, 2 grains (I have no thyroid and haven't for 10 years), and also take T3 occasionally. I was hoping Cortef would give me the energy boost I needed... but so far...... still the same. But hey, if it's helping fight the CPN, great!
