is methylation like chelation therapy?

Ruth, Methylation is the phase 2 pathway of detoxification for the body.  Some users here are finding that they are poor detoxifiers and discovering neutraceutical supports to improve the way they remove medication, heavy metals and toxins from their bodies.

http://www.holisticheal.com/comprehensive-methylation-panel-with-methylation-pathway-analysis.html<

This may be something else that you may be interested in looking into if you continue to be challenged by the protocol.

For myself I was tested (through another lab and a different test and found to be a poor phase II methylator and I use methylation supports my glutathione production was found to be adaquate at that time.  See my blogs and my signature.  Better yet look into Yasko's Detoxification Protocol, Simplified.  Personally I found the addition of Sam-e extremely effective in feeling brighter and stronger and able to enjoy life more.   I had a consult with LEF that suggested that I could take up to 800mg of it per day.  At the time of that consult I was only taking 100 - 200mg/day, since then I have gradually worked it up to the full 800 and what a difference.

This past weekend I attended a day long dance exercise event, I was able to dance every song with little fatigue until I was walking out, and then after a bit of supper I was able to drive several hours home and unpack before bed, yesterday, I had some muscular use awareness but minimal and to day even less.  Getting the CPni out of my cells has certainly helped but the adjuncts for detoxification support are up there on the list of I won't be forgetting these supplementsi on anyday.

Hoping for future improvements for you Ruth, we started treatment at about the same time as I recall.

Are you enjoying the sunny South West just now?   I've considered signing up for some tanning booth sessions, not many months of good sun here per year.      Louise

 Jenne,

This is a great link of information. I know we all have some sort of missing peice in our methyl. pathway. If anyone is interested in learning more about chronic infectionsi and genetic predisposition, this site offers some very good information. It is very helpful for us to learn and understand where our methylation pathyways are mssing links to proper health and wellness.

Great to know... Thank you Jeanne.

Bonnie, I'm glad that you found this post helpful.  I am considering odering the book, workbook and DVD package and also the third form of B12 that I have not used at this point.

Raven, is this the comprehensive methylation panel that you took some time back?   http://www.holisticheal.com/comprehensive-methylation-panel-with-methylation-pathway-analysis.html<

Have you heard anything about the new book that I provided the link to in the title of this forum topic?  I called around locally, but as I suspected it was not available locally.

I do like to look through a book first particularly expensive one's but if this gets me a greater understanding of the processes involved and the options for methylation support then it could be worth it, less expensive than an MD visit and maybe a better use of time!

Thanks to both of you for what you have shared over time regarding this topic.     Louise

Hi Bonnie,  you're welcome.   I thought others might want to have the direct link on the testing.... The link Louise posted  on the book was informative, (thanks Louise )  but I  was more curious  to know where/how the methylation testing could be done, (ergo I dug a bit deeper and posted the link on testing)... there is also an example of the test< results which is  very informative  as well:

http://www.holisticheal.com/media/downloads/mpa-john-doe-20090915.pdf<

JeanneRoz ~ DXi'd w/ CPNi 4/2007; 6/07 -"officially" dx'd w/CFIDSi/FM; also: HHV6, EBVi, IBSi-C, 100 Doxyi:BIDi<; 500 mg Biaxin BIDi; Tindamax Pulses, B12 shots, ERFA Dessicated Thyroid,Cortef, Iodoral 25 mg, Vit D-6,000 uni

Personally, adding the simple methylation supplementsi made a huge difference during the past year and a half of treatment.  It was the connection to this website that started me looking at this potential deficiency in my liver's detoxification of the medications, supplementsi, and other substances that need to be eliminated from the body, which were contributing to my die off experiences and my not feeling as well as I knew I could.

I have order the the book, workbook and DVD to enhance my understanding beyond the articles that I have read on the subject, am hoping that it will be here soon.

The problem with the testing offered through these links is the out of pocket expense (and yes testing is expensive in general if it is not covered by your insurance, which this may not be.)  But for those that can afford the tests it certainly is the superior way to go to be convinced to try methylation support and in a way very specific for your phase I or Phase II or perhaps both detox pathways.

I hope that those who actually choose to do any of the tests offer through all of the links in this post will consider sharing their results. And also what they add and how those adjunct supplements work for them.

I wish that I had known more about augmentation of the detoxification functions of the liver during my first year plus of treatment, it certainly would have made the first 14 months of this protocol less difficult for me.

Anyway, always something more to learn here!   Thanks everyone for making this a productive discussion thread, there has been more general response than I would have imagined.    Louise

The New Book along with the workbook and the DVD are in the mail today I may have it tomorrow.    Once I get into that information, I will know if the conference is something I may want to attend.     I am quite familiar with Boston and it would be possible for me to attend, something to consider.

I will post once I see the video which I am likely to watch first!  Louise

Yilmaz, you have likely noticed that they are requesting no children at the conference.  If you bring another care taker for him they can spend the days at the Children's museum and the Aquarium or such.  And you could travel to consult with her about 4 hr drive from Boston. Or the testing may be done from a distance maybe before and then you could ask questions specifically.

wow Louise, look at you go.  I am so glad you are really well & still helping here.  You're the best.

thanks for the info.  I have long suspected that my body doesn't get rid of toxins well.  When I was super active in my teens, getting my lifeguard, competing in gymnastics, doing 4H, trampoline & school I had cellulite on my thighs even though my fat level was so low I wasn't menstrating.  I was a lean mean muscle machine!

Now I have cellulite all over my body except my face.  As soon as my dog is out of the woods, health wise that is, I will do some reading on the topic.

Raven, it was the MD that assisted with interperting LEF lab tests that made the comment that I could go up to 800mg.  Certainly titrate up and take several days to see what is the best level.    There are cautions for those with any tendencies to Bipolar, manic phase individuals so a word or caution is in order.   And I think those in the younger age brackets may need less, I am closer to 60 now than 50.   Also I heard on the Yasko DVD yesterday that a little taken at night can help kids sleep better.   I may space my doses a bit differently.   400 mg in the AM 300mg in the early afternoon and 100 mg in the evening and see if it improves my sleep even more.

Thanks for the confirm about the methylation testing.  YOu had the genetic testing as well, is that correct?

It could be worth if for further definition about detoxification challenges, after all even when the bugs are pushed out the detox challenges are yours to keep!

Yilmaz, the book and the workbook is an updated edition of her program.  She sees herself as a parent/patient educator and the parents are very involved in the treatment protocol.   She supports the parents in treating their own children.

I would recommend the book and the workbook and the DVD if you can play the US format there in Turkey.

Looks like much of the testing is urine on a regular basis.  You would need to send it out or look for a lab there in Europe that would be closer.   There seem to be many names that are out of the US on the website.

I am sending you a pmessage with a few details.

My geneticsi are actually very similar to John Doe's<.

Spooky!

Hunter: Don't think - experiment

Garcia, when did you get this done?  Did you get a book when you were sent the test kit?  Mine should arrive today or tomorrow.

Are you using any of the specific formulas?   I understand there are several new ones available.   Seems you are a rather + type of guy Wink !

What are you doing with this information that is supporting your treatment?

I had thought that Raven was the only one here to have done the testing.

My nutreval testing supported my supposition of my methylation challenge, and raising my Sam-e from 100mg to 800mg along with ursodiol has my liver inflamation heading towards nil.    I hope to get more specifics to taylor my detox support to my specific needs as even with CPni wittled down, the detox supports are still necessary to quality of life for me.

How long did it take for the results to be returned?   And you sent them from the UK is that correct?    Yilmaz was wondering if they could be sent from his country, so I as this as a result of his questions to me.

Thanks for posting your "profile".  I am actually glad that it is a self pay venture,  who knows what our insurance coverage company would do with the information if they could get their hands on it.  Could target you for all sorts of potential or eventual conditions or tendencies.

>Garcia, when did you get this done?  Did you get a book when you were sent the test kit?

I had it done just under a year ago when it was more expensive. It's better value now. Yes I got the genomics book + dvd for free.

>Are you using any of the specific formulas?

No. Can't afford the $$$.

>Seems you are a rather + type of guy Wink !

Thanks! Oh you mean my genomics? Surprisingly I seem to have less mutations than average. At least for the type of people who get this test done.

>What are you doing with this information that is supporting your treatment?

The supplementation recommendations are probably the most direct thing (similar to John Doe's). I'm also doing RichVanK's simplified protocol, so it's indirectly useful for that.

>How long did it take for the results to be returned?

It wasn't that long. Around 3 months?

> And you sent them from the UK is that correct?    Yilmaz was wondering if they could be sent from his country, so I as this as a result of his questions to me.

Yes if I remember correctly it's a blood spot right? In which case they can be send very easily from anywhere.

>Thanks for posting your "profile".

No problems. I'd be interested in seeing yours (in graphic format rather than text if poss). No worries if you want to keep it private.

Hunter: Don't think - experiment

Garcia, you say "I'm also doing RichVanK's simplified protocol, so it's indirectly useful for that."

Which of the supplementsi that he has suggested in the past few years are you using?   In August 2008 I started  to add Sam-e to jump start my methylation cycle with low dose 100 mg Elemental Sam-e every AM.    (this sam-e thing is confusing, as some mfgs label with the elemental dose and some with the tosylate form dosage making it seem more potent than it really is if this approach is taken, just something else to watch out for).

What I am getting from looking at the Dr Y material is that supplementing is suggested in stages and for certain genetic expressions this is most important.

I am fortunate that I hit it that sam-e was right for me. Seems it is not for everyone and it is now out of what is considered Rich V's simple approach.

I am now up to 800mg elemental same/day in divided doses.    My last shift was to change the spread and add 100mg elemental samee at bedtime, I picked up this change from on of the DVD lectures of Dr Y  that I recently recieved and viewed about a week ago now.    She made a comment that some of the children that needed sam-e might sleep sounder if a small amount was added at bedtime.   Well two nights is not a convincing period of time but so far this seems to be true for me.  I dropped 100mg from my mid-afternoon dosage.

Today I got  my test kit and info.   I think I will call to see if I need an abstinence period (from the sam-e and other methyl donors) before I take the test, to see if there is any chance for any mis-representation possible due to supplementation at the time the sample is taken.  For the money, out of pocket this seems prudent to investigate before sending it off.  I saw no mention in the kit one way or the other.

Also I wonder if you have gone to the new supplement website holisticheal.com yet?  Perhaps you have compared the present formulations and the pricing  and the added formulations listed.  There  are some new formulations and with the price of the test coming down maybe the volumn of sales increasing the supplementsi cost is hopefully coming down as well.  Just a thought.

I am spending so much on supplements and not sure which are really needed, that to spend the money on the test and get a plan for effective supports for my detox pathways will, in the end, possibly save me money over the course of my future, as this detox thing is certainly mine for keeps, even if I get rid of all the bacterial infectionsi and have no active viruses there is everyday life to detox!!!!

The Advanced Neutrigenomics Testing Kit arrived this afternoon. The Book Gentic Bypass is in pdf format all 318pages, Garcia was yours hard copy?

The workbook, which came hard copy with the book is on the CD, a total of 5 files with include also The Supplementation Per Biomedical Testing, A Guide to Neutrigenomic Testing and an Addendum A.  Also with the lab sample supplies there is  the Nutrigenomics Education Starter Park a 2- DVD SET which contains different presentations that those contained in the Autism: Pathways to Recovery 2 - DVD set.

Garcia, this is the Simplified Protocol posted by Rich Vank, is this what you are following? Also , note that all but the 3rd supplement can be purchased from other sources.  I am of the opinion there are others here doing this but haven't posted of it.

The ProHealth dot com site has a Message Board area.... in the ME/Chronic Fatigue  board , there is a subgroup of members who are/have been following the Simplified Protocol.  Rich Vank posts there as well and  readily answers questions to those who post.  (There is also a Yahoo group.)  I've read the site  off and on for a few years..... it's interesting to see how some react to this protocol.    Some have found they have to ramp the Folapro up very slowly or it makes them ill once they start affecting the Methylation Pathway.     Just something for those reading here to consider.

"Here is a section taken from our recent IACFS/ME poster paper that details the protocol:

Simplified Supplement Protocol

The treatment protocol used in this study was extracted from the full treatment program developed by Yasko for the treatment of autism and adult neurological diseasesi [4]. It consisted of five supplementsi:

1. FolaPro [7] (5-methyl tetrahydrofolate): ¼ tablet (200mcg) daily

2. Intrinsi B12/folate [8]: ¼ tablet daily (Combination of [folic acid, 5-methyl tetrahydrofolate, and folinic acid] (200 mcg), cyanocobalamin (125 mcg), calcium (22.5 mg), phosphorus (17.25 mg), and intrinsic factor (5 mg) )

3. General Vitamin Neurological Health Formula [9] (a multivitamin, multimineral supplement including antioxidants, trimethylglycine, nucleotides, supplementsi to support the sulfur metabolism, a high ratio of magnesium to calcium, and no iron or copper): starting with ¼ tablet and increasing the dosage as tolerated, to 2 tablets daily

4. Phosphatidyl Serine Complex [10] (phospholipids and fatty acids): 1 softgel capsule daily

5. Activated B12 Guard [11] (hydroxocobalamin): 1 sublingual lozenge (2,000 micrograms) daily

These supplements are all available from www dot holisticheal dot com, or all but the third one can be obtained from other sources."

If you go to this link,< you can compare the above to Dr. Amy's FULL Methylation protocol.

Hmm.... over the last several years the advice has changed several times from Rich V, getting progressively more concervative as he realizes how impactful it can be to getting wrong for one's self.

The best thing is to find out specifically what one needs are specifically and the best way to do that is save your pennies and take the test should one think that adressing methylation issues have any possibility of helping with your holistic heath, healing your body and your persuit of happiness!

Thanks Ruth, my only comment here is that looking into the topic now might help get your dog out of the woods sooner than later Wink !      Louise

This book was written with a professional writer and the organization of the information is excellent,  for those of you who are having more than the expected die off challenges, I encourage you to consider looking at your genetic mutations whicn can make all the difference in the world in how one processes and tolerates the added burden of detoxification lipophilic endotoxinsi, heavy metals, antibiotic load and just the effects of aging themselves.   It is my sense that many of us could be feeling quite a bit stronger and better during the process of treatment of bacterial and viral infectionsi.    Louise
