Does anyone here drink kefir?

I bought some cranberry kefir at Christmas at the local supermarket.  Tastes a lot like yogurt but what I've read makes it sound better for you because there is extra stuff in it.  I make my own yogurt (sometimes) and thought about making kefir but you have to order a starter.  Oh, maybe I could make a starter with some purchased kefir like I do with organic purchased yogurt.  Any thoughts?

Well, this ought to cement

Well, this ought to cement my reputation as obsessive, but here's yet another way to get your Kefir grains, almost anywhere in the world. This is an amazing app, in its way. Wish they'd let people enter their location on a Google Map, but it's still a good use of the internet.

Sometimes she'll buy back your excess grains. Again, I don't know her at all.

Anyway, we may give it another go, now that I've found a source. Oh, you'll need a strainer, too, to recover the grains.

I have been a fan of plain

I have been a fan of plain Kefir for many years now, and of plain yogurt since the 70's.   Kefir is nice because you can generally drink it.  I also have been advised to as a small amount of Greek Yogurt (plain to my diet).

I drink a bottle every two or three days and it helps.  As jeanneroz said it does taste good.  The website has recipes too under "health and wellness".

Kefir has a somewhat different "lifecycle" than does yogurt. When we made it a long time ago, the starter was a bunch of little rubbery bean-shaped things about the size of peas. They were, I believe, called, "The grains of the Prophet Mohammed" or something.

We can't find them anymore, but would love to get started again.

Lynn, I drink Kefir (store bought from my health food store) and have for over a year and a half.  The brand is "LifeWay" and it appears not to have bad additives and sugar in it. I drink it as part of my breakfast when I wake up.  I can't vouch for it helping me but it does taste good!

I have wanted to make homemade kefir as I have read it's fairly easy but just haven't' taken the time to buy the kefir starters and do it.  I know there are a few others here who drink kefir as well.

If you make your own and find a good recipe, I would be interested in knowing how it turns out.  What brand of yogurt machine do you use, if I may ask?

JeanneRoz, I found an electric rice cooker in my closet that I had never used!  It was a gift I think.  Doc put me on the Special Carb Diet and the book told how to make your own yogurt.  Bring one quart of milk (I use 2%) to simmer and remove from heat.  Cover and cool til room temperature (I put mine in fridge to cool).  Remove 1/2 cup of cooled milk and make paste with 1/4 cup of good quality commercial yogurt (I use organic Stonyfield I think).  Use plain.  Use the leftover fresh Stonyfield for each starter batch.  Mix paste with rest of milk and stir.  I used my rice cooker, took out the rice container and just have a big pot with a glass lid and an electric plug.  I used glass jars (Pickle jars with lids work well.  Make sure you get the right size to fit with the lid on.)

Pour mixture into container, cover with the glass lid of the cooker and let cook at 100 to 110 degrees Farenheit (38-43C) for at least 24 hours.  I check it with a regular thermometer (it may be a digital one).  Of course, make sure it is cleaned with alcohol first!!!  Make sure you keep the temp in this range or you will destroy the good stuff!  Over 24 hours won't hurt it  but at least cook for 24 hours.

Won't be as thick as commercial yogurt but all the lactose is supposed to be completely digested by the bacterial culture. I add some fresh honey to sweeten but I guess you could use sweet and low or splenda, etlc.  It is sour so you will need to add some sweetner.  I found a lady in Ohio that sells kefir grains? dried but I don't know if it's safe that way or not.
