Co-Enzyme Q10

Hi,

I'm a bit confused about how much Q10 should be taken on the protocol.  It states that 30-200mg twice per day should be taken.  I am going to increase Paula's dose from 30mg to 50mg twice per day.  Is this correct or should we aim for the 200mg twice per day?  It just seems quite a large variation.

What does everyone else take?

Thanks,

Mark

The difficulty with Co-Q doses is that different forms appear to be differently absorbable. So higher doses seem to be needed with some products more than others. I switched over to the stabilized form of it which is what Co-Q is converted into in the body for use called Ubiquinol<. It is cheaper to use than Co-Q and lower dose is required for the same blood levels, at least so it is claimed. At any rate, I've found it to be just as effective for me, and anything in a smaller pill is great!

I've just done a google on Ubiquinol and it looks like it is for sale in Europe, specifically Germany in 50mg form.

Jim, how much Ubiquinol do you take per day?  It says on the European website  http://www.super-smart.eu/article.pl?id=0479&lang=en&fromid=GG132<

that Ubiquinol stays in your blood for longer than the normal Q10, so does this mean that if we went with this version, we would only need to take it once per day?

Thanks Michelle,

All these supplementsi on the protocol are so expensive.  We are just trying to get the priority ones sorted out including the Q10.  Paula is allergic to soya, which is in most versions of Q10 available in high street shops.

Where do you get your 200mg Q10 from and how much does it cost?

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks for bringing this up Mark; I think I might increase my doseage.  I am taking NOW foods CoQ10 130 mg & it also has 130 mg of magnesium & there is no soy in it.  There is also 400 mgs of Brown Rice Bran in the Vcaps.  To keep things simpler for me I order most of my "stuff" from American Nutrition & Puritan Pride when they have a big sale.

Mark, I get most of my supplementsi, especially the more expensive ones and thoses that only come in small doses in UK or Europe from Iherb.com<.   Even including the postage and VAT it works out cheaper than buying them over here.   The alternative site I have used is Vitacost.com, but I always end up paying more in taxes and charges when I use them.

When you order from a US based company you will pay for the goods and the carriage but you will get an extra bill from Customs and Excise after you parcel arrives.   The bill is usually conveyed via the carrier, in the case of Iherb it is usually DHL.   It makes sense if you are doing that to order as much as you can afford, they usually have a discount for quantity, also the postage is proportionally cheaper the more you order.

I concentrate my I herb order on the expensive stuff or the vits we can't get in the right dosage in this country; buying Vic B, C, E, Evening primrose oil and Fish oils and Turmeric from Healthspan or Holland and Barret.

Healthy Origins, CoQ10 Gels, 100 mg, 60 Softgels

at Iherb is $11.99 about £6 (plus carriage and VAT), but there are other options there that you might find are cheaper per capsule especially in you buy larger dosage caps or buy a large number per bottle.   It is worth doing the research ...

On average I would say that including carriage and VAT buying from I herb works out at about half the price of buying equivalent doses here.

It used to be the case that I only ordered expensive items from iherb. Now I order pretty much everything from them - it just works out so much cheaper and faster (would you believe) than ordering from a UK internet store. I have even recieved deliveries in a day and a half (e.g. order Wed evening, arrive Fri morning).

Watch out for the VAT forms though. DHL often overcharge for the postage - the so-called "Freight Value", item number 12 in the form. Just ring them up and they'll correct it.

P.S. I take 100mg Q10 (doctor's best from iherb) 2 times a day.

Yes, I take th Ubiquinol in the single pill, 50 mg form as it's equivalent to higher dose of CoQ 10. I haven't tried doubling the dose to see if I feel any difference. I'm mostly into taking as little as possible!

From another page on ubiquinol (note this product is much more expensive than the Swanson product): http://www.biosynergy.com/Ubiquinol.htm<

Who should consider taking Ubiquinol instead of, or in addition to CoQ10 (Ubiquinone)?

Supplementing with Ubiquinol is especially important for individuals who may have difficulty with the natural conversion of CoQ10 to Ubiquinol such as:

  • The late middle-aged to elderly
  • Individuals suffering from specific conditions, especially related to oxidative stress including diabetics and those with liver disease

For everyone else, CoQ10 remains a vital supplement for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Anti-fatigue: Kaneka Corp. did a study to compare the anti-fatigue effects of the ubiquinol and ubiquinone forms of CoQ10. In this study, aged rats were selected to measure how long they could run on a treadmill. The control group using no CoQ10 showed a slight decline in running times. The group receiving the ubiquinone form of CoQ10 had a 60% increase in running time while the group receiving ubiquinol had a 150% increase in running time.

Diabetes: Type 2 diabetics suffer from elevated oxidative stress resulting in autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Japanese researchers found that as the day proceeded, so did levels of oxidative stress. This oxidative stress depleted ubiquinol levels faster than ubiquinone. In fact, diabetics had approximately 75% less ubiquinol than the non-diabetic control group.

Liver disease: Researchers at the University of Tokyo found that like Type 2 diabetics, people with certain types of liver disease including cirrhosis, hepatitis, and hepatoma, suffered from elevated oxidative stress which contributed to a decrease in ubiquinol levels without reducing levels of ubiquinone.

Q. Does the new ubiquinol product make the standard CoQ10 ubiquinone product obsolete?
A. No. The ubiquinone form of CoQ10, especially high bioavailable forms like CoQsol-CFTM, CoQ10 with Omega-3<, and CoQ10 with BioperineTM< have volume of solid data backing its efficacy. The majority of clinical and experimental investigations have been done using ubiquinone, demonstrating its positive nutritional support in the fight against aging including angina pectoris, congestive heart failure, hypertension">i, and many other conditions. Also we can’t forget that ubiquinone is an essential cofactor for the synthesis of ATP energy production. Both forms must be present for efficient ATP production. So, CoQ10 (ubiquinone) remains a vital supplement for maintaining a healthy lifestyle!

Thanks everyone!

I went to that Iherb.com website to look at their prices and couldn't believe my eyes! Most prices there are 66% cheaper than the cheapest online stores I have found in the UK.  No wonder we call it "Rip Off Britain" here.  I'm gonna get the expensive ones from Iherb only and try to keep each order below £18 to avoid paying tax.

Thanks Jim.  I had a look at ubiquinol, but all the forms I could find contained soya, which Paula is allergic to.  I'll get 100mg ubiquinone instead.  Thanks anyway.

Mark, Make sure you sign up for email news from Iherb. They send out notices of specials and NACi and CoQ10 can be even less expensive on occasion!
