Budget "Starbucks"

For years Steve and I have been laughing at people spending $5 dollars on a cup of coffee at Starbucks.  In an airport in Washington, DC during a stopover between flights, I recently tried one of these treats out of boredom at a Starbuck's competitor.  Hmmm...I liked it!  After we got home, we fell into the routine of having a Saturday morning "date" of treating ourselves to these $5 cups of coffee.  The $5 bit sticks in my craw, though, so I experimented this morning and whipped up something that's creamy, flavorful, sweet, practically bad-fat-free, no-sugar-added*, casein-free, even caffein-free.  It's not equal to what we get at Starbuck's, but it's good...and we both went for the 2nd cup.  (*there is a little sugar in our powdered milk)

While a pot of decaf coffee was dripolating, I made a dry mixture of Vance's Dari-free potato starch based "milk" powder, dry cocoa, and Stevia.  Then I blended that with some coconut oil with a fork.  I wasn't satisfied with how that was going, so I finished the blending in a blender.  I added a small amount of hot water to it and blended it into a smooth creamy mixture (it didn't whip).  I poured less than a finger of this into each coffee mug, added a bit more Stevia and a bit of "made" potato milk from the frig, a few shakes of natural vanilla extract, the coffee, and voila!  It's very good.  I'll get smarter and more efficient at this, and I'll experiment with other flavor elements.  This is definitely the start of a white-washed vice.

I had to laugh when I read this - I had just made my husband 1/2 of a friendly PBJ as fat for bile release to take with his Questran.

Friendly PBJ = sprouted bread,  organic cashew nut butter and organic blueberry nutmeg jam.

Sarah,  He came back and

Sarah,  He came back and asked for a 3rd cup of my homemade white-washed "latte."  This time, I increased the creamy mixture.  Afterward, he said it was the best by far, and we never needed to go to Starbuck's again.  Wow!  I feel like hot stuff.

Daisy,  It's amazing how good these substitutes can taste.  In fact, the good ones can easily graduate to being the thing, not the substitute.

Thanks Joyce, when you

Thanks Joyce,

when you refine the recipe, let me know how much of this & that you put in.  When you drink decaf, try to get the brew that is water decafinated & not some long chemical name!  Starbucks uses the long chemical name to decafinate.  Having said that, I do indulge, to treat myself, I tell them to make it as skinny as possible, lol!

I have to watch my girly figure!!
