Blood Cell Infection?

I am a bit confused.  I have read that the EBi's can be carried on red blood cells, but can they invade and infect red blood cells becoming RB's?

Red blood cells have no nuclei, no DNA, no protein synthesis; they're basically just big bags of hemoglobin. It's most unlikely that they could support Cpni growth.
