Maybe they have got stuck with the 'Auto-immunei' label as a short form that people understand, without having realised that they also made the assumption that this syndrome exists?
To my non scientific mind it seems that the immune system is actually doing what it is meant to do and that is clear up infection, the fact that some special humans called doctors and scientists do not see the infection does not mean the the human defence system has turned bad.
